Camera phone for 12 year old

My oldest son is going on a trip to London at the end of the month. We think it would be a good idea if he had a mobile phone with him. He is not fussed about what sort. We also think it may be a good idea if the phone had a camera (one less item to keep track of).
It would need to be PAYG and Vodaphone as we live up in NE Scotland where coverage of most other networks is poor.
We would just like something not too flashy with a reasonable camera in it for souvenir photos. Any suggestions?

I would go on ebay and get one there - you can get a sony erricson s700i (which has a good camera on) for about £30.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

it has a good camera as the module is a 1.3mp CCD sensor (CCD's are used in proper digital cameras). most phones only have a cmos sensor.
if you want an even better camera, go for the SE K750i. it has an excellent 2mp autofocus camera. these can be picked up for about £80 brand new now0 -
How much money are you willing to spend? I got an LG Chocolate yesterday and the camera is very clear. The phone is easy to use. It was £70 on Phones4U website in the clearance section. It comes with a £10 Virgin sim card. But it's already unlocked when you get it.0

Morrisons have a Vodafone Siemens C72 camera phone for £19.99, I don't know if it's any good

You may find an old SE T610 on ebay or somewhere. It has a lousy, VGA camera but probably ok for a 12 yr old. Its build quality is excellent; metal rather than the current plastic. Just has a toggle that he'd not have to break.
just a thought.0 -

the t610 doesn't even have a vga camera. it has a very poor cif resolution camera, which uses software to interpolate the image into vga res0 -
What will the photos be used for? tbh if you want something that's going to be good for anything besides sending to other mobiles (ie if you want to print them out or send them over email etc) you're going to be looking at the higher end of the cameraphone market.
You can get the samsung d900 or the SE k800i (I've used both - they're both *just about* ok for getting prints from etc some of the time) for around £120 if you shop around, but that's a lot of money to trust a 12 year old with and neither of them will be especially robust.
I'd be more tempted to spend as little as possible on a bog standard mobile then buy either a couple of disposable cameras, a cheap film camera or a cheap digital camera for the snaps.
I know it's an extra thing to carry around, but i think you'll get a lot more for your money that way.0
