The easiest way is if your laptop has an S-Video output... which looks like this..

Straight into the S-Video port on your TV (this is normally under a flap at the front of the TV)0 -
I am trying to do the same. I have a cable between LCD TV and laptop (15 pin) but when I go to propertes, settings, advanced, displays, from desktop it says TV not connected. The other two options panel and monitor are available but not TV.
I have tried connecting the laptop before turning it on, turning TV off and on etc but without sccess.
I have a SVHS socket on the laptop, if I get a cable and use it to connect between laptop might this work?
Any other options?
Thanks in advance.0 -
On most laptops you have to 'activate' the display to make it work on an external LCD or TV. For example, on both HP Laptop it's "FN" and "F5" and on my Toshiba Laptop it's "FN" and "F4"0

You'll find that connecting to an 'old-style' tv (non HD) will give a very poor quality picture as the TV resolution isn't high enough. For modern flat TVs it should work with either S-VHS or component connection, though the best will be using DVI, though haven't seen this on a laptop yet. Then follow Fonz's post to activate.0

Thanks for that, mine is a HP laptop running XP and a Samsung HD TV.
Can you explain what you mean by FN and F4 and at what point I need to do what.
Thanks again.0 -
On your laptop keyboard there should be a button (mine is near the bottom) called "fn". Hold this button down and at the same time hit the "F5" key at the top of the keyboard0

Rubbish - if you want watch a movie or streaming video on tv then the picture will be fine.0 -
on my dell it is Fn F8 you then have the option of piping the picture through the tv or through the tv and on the laptop simultaneously0

Hi I have a dell insprion 1300 laptop that doesn't have a s-video solt it just has a VGA video one, what leads do I need to connect it to a tv that has 3 phono (red, yellow and some other colour)?
Thanks in advance0 -

which dell model do you use? I have a Dell Inspiron 640m, which has the S-output and tried many times to push video out without any success. The combination Fn+F8 works perctly if you connect a VGA output (for example a Monitor or a video projector), but I was not able to send the video to the S-video cable to my TV (normal old style CRT-tv)0
