Halifax Clarity - Chances of getting...?

Options
Hi all,

Interested in applying for a halifax clarity card to use abroad for a few holidays this year. I think I'll meet the criteria with income etc and already have two credit cards, one with santander with a £3000 limit, however the other one is already with Halifax and has a £6000 limit.

Will already having a credit card with halifax disrupt my chances with getting the clarity card? Am I best discussing this in branch rather than applying online?

Kind regards in advance.

How long have you had both the Santander and the Halifax cards and what's your annual income?

I think 6 months is the minimum you should wait before applying for another card from the same provider, personally, I'd wait a full year.

If your income is high enough they'll give you a second card, and increase your limit, especially if you earn more now compared to when you applied for the first card.

As the clarity is a 'low rate' card (which I plan to apply for myself sometime) I'd be interested to know what credit limit they offer as it might be smaller than a 'standard' credit card due to the low interest rate.

You mean after you've closed one? Unless things have changed at Halifax recently, the 'wait' time there is just a month.

Whilst there will always be exceptions to the rule, it's been Halifax's policy that you can only hold one 'prime' card with them.

I don't think the 'low rate' plays any part, being as they offered me a £10K limit on a pre-approved card around 12 months ago...despite me having considerable available credit elsewhere (which they'd know from the CRA monthly feeds they take).

Halifax always seem to have worked on current account 'throughput'/account management in my experience.

I've had the santander card for around 2-3 years and the halifax card for around 5-6 years. Annual income of £22,000 - never had any credit problems, always paid on time, in full. Currently debt-free.

They may allow you to convert your existing card to a Clarity.
Is there any reason that you'd want to keep the existing one as is?

Pretty sure you would have to close your halifax card, HBOS dont allow you to hold two cards from the same company.

i.e. you could have a halifax, Bank of Scotland and Lloyds card but only one from each.

Not particularly, the credit limit is high but I've never gone anywhere near it. Do you reckon asking this in branch might be worthwhile?

Why wait for a branch to be open, you could give them a call and ask now. Others have reported success doing so.

Others have also reported that they've successfully applied for a second Halifax card, and been approved, but it seems to be hit and miss that way. You could apply, then if declined ask about switching the card over?
  • I was recently "declined" a halifax clarity card much to my surprise. I'm earned 100k a year, never missed payment on any loan/mortgage/card and have no debts. No other credit cards with halifax and been a current account holder with them for 15 years.

I don't know what you have to do to get credit these days. . .

(And yes, I'm on the electoral register!)

Any one else had trouble getting one?
