Car Insurance: What constitues to making a claim?

Car Ins due for renewal next month, just shopping around and wondering what to put for the question "Have you made a claim in the last 5 years, regardless of fault.."
Well, in 2011 someone ran into the back of me, but I never claimed from my insurance. I went via my Solicitor who recovered the costs from the third party's insurance.
So does this mean that I've made a claim or not? As all I did was instruct my Solicitor.

Yes. A claim was made.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Yes you made a claim. You are a higher risk because you've had a crash even if it wasn't your fault. That's what "regardless of fault" means
Next you'll be taking a car back to a dealer because the petrol light has come on after five days of use....What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

A claim is a legal term for having a contractual clause brought in to force.
For this you have to be a contract holder.
You can not claim on someone else's contract.
Insurance companies love dragging the wool here.
The other driver claimed your loss on his contract of insurance and that loss was paid to you as you were the third party who suffered loss caused by the first.
So legally you did not claim as it was not your contract.
However Insurance companies like their cake and to eat it, so I would ask them to define what they constitute as a claim.Be happy...;)0 -

That is sort of how I was understanding it.0 -

What is the exact entire question they have asked and which Insurer is it?0 -
I thought they all asked if you had any accidents in the past 5 years as well.0

So the answer is you have not had a claim, but you have had an accident, so need to answer with YES.0
