Sue - I could not leave a like as I needed to sign in. Please tell him that was very good.

    I also like the elephant.

    Aww thanks

The elephant belongs to my mum....I am sensible and the drum kit lives at my parent's! The room where the kit is, is my old bedroom and still has my choice of floor covering circa 1983.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Quite. Equally when they tell you stuff that you don't want to know. I've told my mother they are conversations I just don't want to have. I was mortified when she told me what dogging was after watching an article about it on Richard and Judy. Daytime TV for pensioners has a lot to answer for.

As far as my parents are concerned, I remain firmly with brain of my eight year old self, thinking that the Queen became present by Prince Phillip because when they went to sleep at night the sperm walked down his pyjama leg and up her nightie.

When my DD was small we explained in an age appropriate way that babies were made by mummy and day having a 'special hug'.

Role on a few years and we were in California in a supermarket when DD brings over a packet to me and asks "whats a condom?". I explain in adult terms ....and she looks appalled.

A few weeks later we are home again and the front page of the newspaper runs the story of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski.DD asks me "what's oral sex". Remembering her reaction to the condom explanation I reply " a different kind of special hug".

Yup. I may be the only prude left on this thread now I think.:o

My mum came out with something which shocked the blooming life out of me tonight. We were talking about a Beswick Tiger, approx 12 inches long when she randomly started talking about a man her and dad used to know in Sussex who had a 12 inch one.

She then went back into the house (we were in the conservatory) only to come back out 5 mins later (and when we had finally stopped laughing in shock at her other comment) and said that he could fit 12 old pennies on it!

Any one able to offer any advice on vaccinations?

We don't know whether dh has had a measles jab (or anything else for that matter). Obviously his mother isn't around to ask, and the gp here said records don't go back that far, in Italy there is no record of him having any vacs. He remembers having some, so that was probably in uk.

If the gp says record don't go back that far again, what do we do to find out?

I didn't have all of mine but went to mumps parties (don't think I caught mups though) and did have whooping cough when I was a kid. I know I haven't had rubella but haven't been able to get it since I pointed this out after I got I'll because I haven't been considered well enough for the vaccination. (Though I know I would be).

It's never seemed a real issue till this measles outbreak....not sure what he should do...

In 2005 the London health authorities ran a catch-up programme in schools for the MMR, to vaccinate everyone that had been missed for whatever reason in the past. At that time their policy was to vaccinate everyone, even those that had been vaccinated previously. We looked into this because DS2 was at a London school at the time and was offered the vaccination as part of that catch-up programme but all his jabs had been through the Hertfordshire GP. The advice we found was that there was no harm in being vaccinated again (though subject to the usual caveats about being generally healthy etc).

From what we read at the time, the MMR vaccination is only 80% effective and you need 90% effectiveness to protect "the herd". The policy of re-vaccinations was also hoping to increase that 80% by the people that had had the vaccination but it hadn't been effective first time. There was little evidence then on whether the people who were immune to the effects of the vaccination would be helped by a second jab or not.

So if you want my advice, I can't see it doing any harm. (Even if the link with autism had any credibility, which it doesn't, people don't develop autism as adults.)

On the other hand you are miles from Swansea!

In some cases you can have a blood test to see if you carry immunity but not sure if measles is one. Assume gp would have suggested it if it was an option...

Best solution is to avoid Swansea (which any sane person would do anyway).

You find out the general UK immunisation programme for exact years in question.

Am going to Scoland in May for a week or so. Will be staying with family near Skye - stopping overnight in Edinburgh on the way there and back.

Does anyone have any recommendations about what I should do.

NB I've already got "drink a bit too much single malt and argue about Aberdeen house prices" on the list.

Interestingly they are busy vaccinating in Swansea schools this week - but only those who haven't had the vaccine before, the London catch up programme in 2005 vaccinated everyone to act as a booster to those who had had it previously.
