i-phone4 best contract

Options
I hope someone can help as I am a bit of a technophobe. My daughter wants an i-phone having been using a very old and cheap basic mobile for the last few years. She has not therefore any history of internet, apps, e-mail etc usage on her phone. As I understand it she wants to be able to reply quickly to e-mails and find addresses, maps tel numbers etc while out and about. She also mentioned wanting to use apps (not sure what for as my phone is even more old and basic) She uses about 150 mins calls plus about 750 mins virgin to virgin calls (mostly to family so I can change provider if there is an inter provider deal) and sends about 650 texts a month. I thought it would be best to buy the phone and then do a sim only contract but as far as I can see this may be more expensive depending on data use. What sort of data limit would normally be enough and does this include wifi, e-mail etc? Sorry to sound so stupid but I am really not sure someone in a shop with a vested interest in the amount I spend can help much. Also what provider is generally thought to give the best coverage? Many thanks

  • Yes kids are so much into buying an iPhone, but being an iPhone developer myself I would recommend you buy an Android phone, the hardware features of an Android powered phone like Google Nexus is nearly same or better than iPhone also the price is quite less 90% of the apps which are on iOS operating system are also available in Android version.
Also Android phones with good looks and quality will help her make an image in her friends but first you should tell her that you are going to buy her an Android mobile not an iPhone.
I hope that answers your question.

Look at Tesco if you want a "proper" rolling contract, they have a plan where you can cap the spend so she cannot run up a huge bill or GiffGaff if you want a pay as you go type solution.

Tesco run on O2, but as to who's the best coverage that really depends on where you are going to be using the phone, all networks have blackspots and if you live in one it doesn't matter how good the network is elsewhere.

Final point would be think about a 4S not a 4, The iPhone 4 is 30 months old, and Apple have a yearly release cycle, and have supported three models back for there phones. It's likely the 4 will become unsupported when the next release is out in September 2013.

One thing to think about is what happens if you go over the allowances in the contract - a PAYG phone or a capped contract (Tesco mobile offer them) is safer for a teenager.

I'd agree that an iphone is a very expensive option - for our teenage daughter we went for a decent android phone, and it does everything she needs.

Wifi is not included in your data allowance, but anything else she does on the internet will be. We've gone for 1GB allowance - if your DD is like mine she will need at least 500GB.
  • Thank you to everyone for your help and I think a good chat with the daughter about getting an android not an i phone is now called for!!
