Hotel chains in USA, best value?

Anyone had experience of using chain motels in the USA? I know en-route in the past I have seen many different ones like motel 6, comfort inn etc, but never needed to use them. This year I will need a few overnights.

What are best value for cost and quality.?

That covers so many motels that the answers you get would depend on the individual hotels as opposed to the chains.

I have stayed in a few but again if they are not on your route it wouldnt really matter how good or bad they are.

Your best bet would probably be to work out which motels are on your route and then look on tripadvisor to check them out.
  • I agree, hotel chains aren't all they are cracked up to be. If you let us know where you need a hotel I'm sure a few people will be able to give you some recommendations...

If you are just 'overnighting' then Econolodge, Motel 6 and Red Roof Inns may be what you're looking for, however at this lower end of the hotel market there are some dumps!

As JoseChungsDoomsday says tells us where you're headed and we or Tripadvisor will help :D

We've stayed in a lot of chain hotels in the States over the years.

We never book them ahead - better to turn up early evening ( before 8pm) - ask to see a room - if you don't like it you don't stay.

Most chains are grouped within close proximity of each other, so by popping in and looking you know what you are getting.

As soon as you get to the Status pick up one of their coupon books - they are green and available in Hotel receptions etc.

I've stayed in two Fairfield Inns (Marriott's budget chain) and two Hamptons (part of the Hilton group)in the past year. All were excellent, in terms of comfort, service and especially price/ value for money. The Hampton in Savannah was particularly good, although it was the most expensive of the four.
The Fairfield in Seattle airport was £42 inc. breakfast for a family of four. Incredible value - it even had an indoor pool.

Thanks. I will have to figure out a route. I am arriving in Atlanta, but not sure whether we are going west, east or south yet. A lot depends on which friends we visit first. All are too far away to reach on the first night, especially after driving overnight to bristol, flying 9 hours and then immigration etc. So to begin with a cheap hotel for family of 6 in the Atlanta airport area would be usefull. But I expect that getting out of the metro area would be our first task.
I just thought that some chains offered discounts and perhaps a minimum standard across the board, like a travelodge?

I have used 5 different best westerns all in the west USA and all have been a better standard than a travelodge here.

I did have reservations for a Goodnite inn once but after reading reviews on tripadvisor I cancelled it, but they are cheap

Remember that you need to have an address to give to immigration detailing where you are spending at least the first night of your stay otherwise they will not let you in so it would be advisable to get something booked and print off the full address so that you have it to hand when you fill in the visa waiver form.
You pay for the room in America and not per person so if sharing is not a problem lookout for the motels that have rooms with multiple beds. As was said previously look out for the booklet with the coupons as it can amount to quite a large saving over the course of a couple of weeks.

I agree with photome, best western are great clean hotels and breakfast thrown in for anything between $60 and $80 dollars... You must get the voucher booklets you will see loads of booths alongside gas stations and 7 - 11's . We saved 40 bucks a night stayed in bradenton 2 bed 2 bathroom condo with spa, pools, tennis courts just $80 per night using voucher booklets.... they have airport hotels too.. enjoy
I would love to be a Travel Agent :j

If you are staying in a number of hotels I would recommend signing up with Trip Rewards to get extra nights and stuff and then plan your hotels according to the hotels in this scheme.
