Talktalk!! I WANT OUT!

I think its fair to say after small amount of googling TALKTALK have been talked about a lot on these boards, so i apologise for adding one more talktalk rant.
I've not been lurking (as others say) on the boards for long, just because im desperate to get some advise as to wether i can get out of my contract without paying 48 quid for cancelling early. Contract finishes on the 3/10/13.

I'm sure you've heard it all before, customer service are rude, reading of a scriptand baffeled or ignore any question that is not on the script, hang up the phone on me, bad internet connection or no connection.

The only one that i've not come across is someone from ''technical support'' telling me to ''remove the front panel of the main phone socket with a screwdriver and putt internet phone line directly into the main connection. If this doesn't work you might have to take the main box off''
I did stupidly do as he said, to be honest i just really needed my internet back and after about 1-2 hours of turning stuff on/off, pulling wires out/in, resetting and restarting.... I really needed to get on.. This was a while ago. I have been ill since and had forgotten all about it. Until yesturday when i found my 3 year old daughter poking around with some rouge cables tucked inside the box!
I obviously don't know what's a danger and whats not, as i'm not trained and a bit of a moron. Which is exactly why they shouldn't be asking me to unscrew anything, surely?

Should i report this to someone? Any idea who?

Am i right in thinking that if i swap to sky or virgin they'll actually send a proper technician out to install it?

I found a post on here titled ''talktalk will let you break 18 month contract'' but it was from 2006 don't suppose anyone knows wether that is still a possibility?

Thank you for any replies..

The reason to remove the lower faceplate of your master socket is to eliminate possible problems cause by extensions. These are wired to the back of the removable faceplate.
If you don't have extensions there is no point in doing this however.

Telephones only have a maximum of 50 volts coming down the line limited to 50mA or so, thus are not a danger.
Not a good idea leaving covers off though.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

my mum has just got out ofher talktalk contract but she has had to pay about £30, she wrote to them listing the issues and that by not supplying the service she was paying for they had actually broken the contract

So, because the TT agent didn't specifically tell you to put it back, you left the cover off? I don't think that one is in their script.
As above, testing from the BT test socket is standard user procedure, and perfectly safe.

I have had my cover off for over 2 years. I am not with TT, it is a common problem with all providers.Oh I should say that since taking it off my BB has been fine.

If it works when using the test socket, then it's not a provider problem, it's a problem with your extension wiring or sockets-which are your responsibility alone.

I could post a link to a troubleshooting guide, but since it is hosted on my own website then MSE mods get @rsey about this, thinking it is self-promotion. :naughty: :silenced: :rotfl:

(I link directly to the PDF itself, not to a page that has the link).
