How to retailers know if a bank card matches a cheque book.

They're not shops though, are they? And even if you pay at the post office (not sure if they accept cheques for these services) you won't be walking away with what you've paid for, and you won't get your DL or passport until the cheque has gone through clearing.
I can't recall seeing any major retailer that still takes cheques, not that I've tried to use one in a shop for ... well, I can't remember how long.0 -
Only the sortcode had to match; the guarantee used to be per customer per branch, rather than per account.
As others have mentioned, the guarantee scheme has been dead for some time.43580
