How to retailers know if a bank card matches a cheque book.

Just curious.
I have my personal banking and business banking with the same branch. I have a debit card with my personal bank account but nothing with my business bank account. Cheque books with both.
Yesterday I wrote a cheque from the business account and without thinking passed over the cheque guarantee card for my personal account. As they both have the same sort code number, the retailer knew no different, copied the long number on to the back of the cheque and handed it to me back.
It was only later on that I realised what had happened.
So how is a retailer meant to know? and does it matter?

Cheque guarantee scheme ended some time ago so it's irrelevant.I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0

Cheque guarantee ended at the end of June 2011 so it doesn't make any difference any more.Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0

They're suppose to check the sort code and the account number, but most shop staff have no clue when it comes to cheques.
But as has been said, it's irrelevant now0 -
When I worked in a shop (20 years ago) we never needed to take a guarantee card for a cheque from a business account.0

Account number isn't on the card, only 16 digit code.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. When it was in place, and before cheque cards became debit cards (which obviously have to be linked to a specific account), the guarantee scheme covered any cheque written on a cheque book with the same name and sort code. The account number wasn't relevant and wasn't even printed in many cases. This meant you only needed to carry one cheque card even if you had a sole and a joint account at the same bank. The card covered both accounts. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

It only ever applied to personal customers and sole traders.
Unless the business account was the latter, the guarantee was invalid.
Business customers tried to use them all the time; particularly with credit cards that had a cheque guarantee logo .JimmyTheWig wrote: »When I worked in a shop (20 years ago) we never needed to take a guarantee card for a cheque from a business account. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
