My neighbour was upset the other day. Her 19yr old granddaughter was talking about wether or not she'd go to uni, gran says its a lot of debit to have hanging round your neck, not really says granddaughter, after all mum says when you die I'll have the money off your house!

I tried not to laugh really, I asked her if she'd like me to and get a spade and dig a grave on the front lawn and roll her in it, lol!

Thank you all - several posts on this thread have made me laugh out loud!

Here in Okinawa you are not considered "past it/approaching your funeral" until you are well into your 90s. My MIL is 63 and my neighbours consider her a very young grandmother! However I honestly believe a lot of people in the UK consider over 40 "past it".

I often see my next door neighbour (lady of 86) climbing up and down the mountain behind our homes to tend to her fields of veggies. She regularly hands some in for us - they are delicious! Rather her than me - you wouldn't catch me anywhere near my back garden never mind the mountain given that my husband discovered a dangerous poisonous snake in it last week!

Your figures appear to be wrong. Over 35 years you'd pay:

    £4 a month * 12 months = £48 a year.
    £48 a year for 35 years = £1,680 in total.

What's the payout when you die? You mention £4,800. However, according to their online quote service it's £1,330 if you pay £5 a month. It doesn't allow me to select a £4 a month plan.

So, it looks like the payout will be a little over £1,000.

Is it really worth it? It wouldn't even cover half the price of a funeral today, let alone in 35 years times!
yep my maths is a bit out snowtiger (I stand corrected) indeed £4pm is £48per year over 35 years is £1,680 in total but I am just trying to cover the cost of the funeral which as I say would be around £3k by todays standards, I aint bothered about a cash payout just dont want to leave a funder director passing a bill to my next of kin, but its made me wonder so I will meticulously go over the policy and report back

it worked for us. we got back roughly 3 times what we had paid in when mum passed away. with out it we could not have covered the cost. it is a lot more expensive than normal life insurance. but some of us cant get that.

OP perhaps they were trying to tell you something? ;)
  • A girl I work for had her aunts cremation organised by the Co-Op and when the ashes turned up to be buried with her uncle they were in a box in a Co-Op carrier bag! Definitely put me off using the Co-Op's funeral services.

Yes exactly that! I've never attended anything like a cremation or memorial service for burying the ashes so wouldn't know what to expect but I would hope for something more dignified than a plastic bag.
