Advice on possible broadband move - current BE customer

Hi,

I'm currently with BE broadband and given that they've now been bought out by Sky I've been looking to move elsewhere.
The area I live has no access to cable or fibre broadband and as far as I'm aware the only option that leaves me for unlimited broadband is either Sky, BT or Plusnet (although apparently fibre is coming in June 2013).

I'm also out of contract with BT so would consider moving line rental elsewhere.

I was seriously considering switching to Sky which is offering the 6 months free unlimited broadband deal. What concerns me though is that literally 95% of my neighbours use Sky broadband so I'm concerned that the speed will be slow due to overcapacity.
I currently get 3.8 mb/s which is terrible but having checked broadband speeds in my area online, my neighbours who have Sky have only been getting maximum 2 mb/s.

If I switched to Sky and found the speed too slow I would cancel within their cancellation period but this would involve crawling back to BT and starting a new line rental contract and possibly having to pay a reconnection fee (I'm not sure whether they would charge for this again).

At the moment I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. I really should have switched elsewhere for broadband before now given that the speed promised is nowhere close to what I get but it's been a combination of beng lazy and also a case of 'better the devil you know'. I know I'll be moved over to Sky eventually if I do nothing but in that case I'd probably still have BT line rental as I don't foresee Sky forcing people to take their line rental unless they compensate customers who break their BT contract to do so.

Also no one I talk to seems to have a good say about BT, Sky or Plusnet so it's difficult to form a well-informed opinion of any of them.

Sorry for the long post. I would just really love some advice on my best options.

Thanks in advance.

Why not stay with BE and see what happens when you are swtched over to Sky LLU? Are BE customers being offered the same 12 months free deal as O2 customers? If so then that is a no-brainer.
If you want more speed, then wait for FTTC in 3 months time, you will be able to get that from Plusnet or Sky as well as BT.
3.8Mbps is not 'terrible', it's around the UK national average speed.

Like everyone I'm trying to save a bit of money and given I'm paying £18.50 for BE plus £15.45 a month for line rental (and like a lot of people I don't even use my landline for calls, simply so I can get broadband) I wanted to cut my bill. Sky line rental is £14.50 p/m with 6 months free broadband and then £7.50 p/m after that.

I don't know, I've tried searching but couldn't find any posts about BE retention deals. I haven't called them myself yet.

    Hi

I'm with Be and I've just signed up for 12 months half price broadband (from £18.26 to £9.13 per month). Call the Be and the option is thinking of leaving/I want to leave.

When the 12 months are up I'm off to Plusnet Unlimited Fibre.:)

    Ok,

I took the advice given on the post and called BE and got the half price offer for 12 months. It was really easy to get so I could have maybe pushed for more but I didn't want them to say 'oh ok, well that's it cancelled then :P'.

I figure that since the Sky deal will probably be complete by the time the 12 months are up it'll give me the time to see what they're like.
Also, there may be fibre in my area by then too so I can move then if I like.

Now I'm going to sign up for the BT 12 months pre-paid line rental to save there too.

Thanks for all the advice everyone :) !!!
