I first discovered raclette in Switzerland back in the 80s and loved it so much that I brought a machine back with me! We boil some new potatoes and use the top to keep them warm, then slice the cheese and grill it underneath. We then serve the potatoes as we need them and put the melted cheese on top. I serve it with silverskin pickled onions. As an accompaniment I buy or make tzaziki as it counteracts the richness and have a box of Pringles and some cruditees for dipping. You can buy raclette cheese at the Waitrose deli counter.

It makes for a fun meal with friends (although you need to keep tiny fingers away as it does get very hot!).

I'm sure there's loads more you can use them for - perhaps we should have a 'raclette thread'?

Thanks for this, I've always wanted one, but couldn't justify paying £30 upwards when I know it will only come out a few times a year!

I saw these at the Ideal Home Show (although 4 times the size of the M&S one) and they were selling it for £80. It looked really good.

I have also seen them in Lidl (four times the size) but it was about £18 I think. The quality didn't seem to too bad either.

I would love to buy one but I should really save up for it. :(

Ordering one, amazing price - in-laws can have our old one.
It's a great way to feed lots of people, without having to do the cooking yourself. Even if you don't want to do it with cheese, just meat & veg, gets people together & interacting.

In France, we do it this way: use the little pans underneath to melt your cheese slices ("raclette cheese"! Expensive, but worth it!) as you go. Use the top to keep a pan of boiled potatoes warm. We also do cauliflower.

We eat that with "continental" meats, like ham, parma ham and salami. And cornichons!

    I'm hungry now...:D

What I particularly like about this M&S one is that it has a variable heat control. My old one didn't so you were always having to switch it on and off or the cheese got too dried out and the potatoes would scorch.
