Direct line & Tesco always come out best for me. Direct line don't show up on comparison websites. I've never found Sheila's wheels to be competitive.

I read that Tesco will not allow you to transfer the policy to a new vehicle if you have a write off. When you say best, do you mean best or cheapest? They dont appear to be best. However, they do appear to be cheap. Cheap is rarely best as its usually cheap for a reason.

Could we have an example please of someone who has moved house and been pleasantly surprised when the insurance company has halved their premium?

It does happen, doesn't it? And just as often as the other way round. :)

  • OP - I feel your pain.

I have just moved from a Leicestershire village to the outskirts of Coventry. Car insurance increased from £38 per month to £89. Thats on a C3 2years old, full NCB, mature lady driver. I do have to have business use though.

Contents insurance went up too. Just have to face it some areas are riskier than others. I thought it was Ok here as I have known the area years, was brought up here but got a note through door from police last week that neighbour at back was burgled in the middle of the night.
Back after 9 years in France ... starting again

They seem to work on the basis of postcodes - but in a very limited, broad brush kind of way. We are moving from a quiet cul-de-sac half way up a hill in the Pennines, 4 miles from the nearest post office (let alone pub/nightclub/stadium), to a main road within a mile of a town centre with a plentiful supply of pubs etc. And our insurance will be £40 lower. We're currently in an Oldham postcode (but a long way from Oldham), our new house will be in a Bradford postcode. No, I don't understand why it would be cheaper, and nor did the woman at Aviva.
And as for insurance companies not plucking figures out of the air - have you never negotiated a premium? What's that if not just making it up as they go along?

She wouldnt be a call centre operative if she did.

I suppose you think all products are priced that way?

Well my uni address is several thousands of pounds cheaper than my home address? And I keep my car at uni, so it's registered here

I'd love £616! My insurance is around £730 next year IF I have a one year no claim bonus, and I'd need a box as well...

dunstonh, dunstonh, dunstonh - how very rude about call centre operatives.
And my point was that, while I don't doubt that stats are used in working out insurance premiums, that's not the only tool they use. Where do all the stats go when you tell them you can get a better deal elsewhere and they agree to match the price?
And the reason the woman at Aviva couldn't tell me why my insurance is cheaper on a main road than half way up a Pennine says more about the complexities of insurance premiums than the calibre of the operatives. In our own case, we pay £1050 to insure two drivers on three cars under a multicar deal with Aviva. For a variety of reasons I want to reduce it to just one driver (me) on just one car. We will only save 30% of the premium by doing this. And in fact the one car with just me driving it will cost more than the same car with both myself and my husband driving.
Sorry to hi-jack the post, just wanting to agree with the OP that there doesn't seem to be a great deal of logic in the way insurance premiums are worked out.

It wasnt rude. People qualified and knowledgeable about these things do not answer the phone for admin tasks at call centres. To expect them to have the knowledge is silly.
