Dopey question - do you switch wireless routers off?

I leave my wireless access point on as I have the security configured correctly, my router remains on all the time as well no reason to switch it off. the only benefit is to save power if you switch it off. I couldn't be bothered switching it on every time I want to use it, I also don't switch the PC off so I don't have to wait for it coming on.

We have 3 PC's and a laptop in the house everyone uses the connection so it would annoy someone if they had to come and turn it on each time they wanted to use it.

Turning on and off the power to electrics always shortens their life. What few pence you 'save' on lecky will cost ££ in having to replace the kit when it fails prematurely.
  • I leave mine on the wireless is off anyway, saves having to wait for it to reacquire the connection surely thats one of the point of having broad band it's always 'on'
Nothing to see here, move along.

Turning it on and off in quick succesion can cause thermal shock and reduce the life of the product.

I turn both router and WAP off when not using it. The main reason is that it is in my bedroom and I can't sleep with the transformer hum, which my wife says she cant hear, but it sounds like ££££££££ to me .....................

I leave mine on for the reasons already mentioned but I don't understand why Netgears don't have an on/off switch like other models
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

That's what confused us. It has a power light but can only be turned on and off by unplugging. It doesn't actually say about switching them on or off anywhere either, which only confused us more.

Anyway, it was unplugged last night and was fine today, so will be switched off at sockets along with rest of computer from now on. I don't bother switching it all off during the day - just at night.

Don't think the neighbours would be bothered trying to hack into ours when there are at least two available which are unsecured and still have original router name! Feel happier with things switched off at night though.

    Thanks all,
