ESA ending this year

Hiya,

I am currently in the ESA support group, and as I understand it ESA will be ending later this year. What will be replacing it? Will I have to reapply and go through the whole rigmarole of medicals and interviews again or will I be transferred onto it? Where can I find out more information so I can be prepared.

Thanks.

ESA (and everything else) will eventually be replaced by Universal Credit, i think they are rolling it out in april (or october?) in some places but not sure when they will start transferring exisitng claiments

    Hopefully someone else will know

It is all according to which one you get.

‘Contributory ESA’ will continue to exist outside of Universal Credit – however it is being time-limited for people in the work-related activity group.
People who get ‘income-related ESA’ will be moved on to Universal Credit.

People who are found to have a ‘limited capability for work-related activity’ and are put into the support group will continue to get income related and contributory ESA indefinitely.

But people who are in the work related activity group have their contributory ESA ‘time-limited’ and will only be able to receive the benefit for a year in total.

You should be fine either way, as you are in the support group.
You will either stay as you are or you will be transferred over to UC. It should be a straightforward transfer. No medical will be needed.

Why do you think ESA is ending this year?

Do you mean you have been placed in the support group for 1 - 2 or 3 years and your time is nearly up? In which case, 2 months before your time is up, you should expect to get an ESA50 for re-assessment. Before sending it back, you should photocopy it for future reference. You will be assessed on paper and they may not want to see you in person or they may decide they do want to see you again.

Sorry I know jumping in with another question, I came in to read about the changes as I did get something saying payments will change in Nov, but something has occurred to me with your post so I hope the lady does mind me jumping in with a question.

I was given ESA for a year before my review just recently, it took them forever to actually see me and I have not log ago had back payment for the months I was waiting for my assessment.

With the follow up one's are they usually on time? If not what happens? do I go back down to basic again while waiting for the assessment and then get back dated if I get through or onto work group? Hoping I will be out of treatment and well enough to go into the work related group or whatever it's called. I am desp to get well enough and to get some help finding some work I can manage. I find the whole systems a total shambles honestly. The form filling and medicals and lack of knowledge is a nightmare.

Hope that's clear and sorry jumping in, just it only came to me reading your post so seems silly to start a new thread xx

You move over to universal credit 'soon'.
Timetables for this seem likely to slip, given reports that initial UC claims for fit-and-well people are allegedly being processed by hand, after the IT suppliers have been told to stop work.

Well she hasn't come back so I don't think it willl matter :)

The follow ups are generally on time but can be about 2 months late. You remain on your current payment until you have the decision made -which might find you fit for work- then payments stop and will only start again if you get a sicknote from the date of decision and submit an appeal. But appeal rules are changing in April and we are not sure if you will be paid for the first stage of the appeal process.
