I have just left college and start uni in september,
Can I claim ?
If you are between courses and not a continuing student you may be able to HOWEVER my experience of trying to claim immediately before I started my foundation degree is that the advisors insisted I declare that I was willing to look for all types of work - permanent and temporary - and to give up my plkace at uni if I was offered work.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

this is something i'm currently worrying about and if there's anyone out there who can clarify it'd be really appreciated! i signed on recently and have got a form through the post asking for more information about finishing college and whether i'm continuing education this year.
to be frank, they didn't specifically ask if i was going to uni this year in my initial interview so i didn't say anything. there's no mention on this form of whether i'm starting a new course. the questions are how my tuition fees were funded at college, whether the course was full/part time and whether i'm continuing or completing my course at any point.
at my initial interview, the advisor told me they're not awarding uni students JSA as it's "not worth their time". as far as i'm aware, the rules for a while have been that uni students between years can't claim, so does this mean prospective students now can't claim either? even though i'm genuinely looking for paid work and fulfilling all the requirements of my jobseekers agreement (actually i'm going above and beyond, but nevermind )?
so confusing!!0 -

yet i am from a single parent family my mother is on benefits yet am at uni doing anthropology, so it is possible.0 -
I am a mature student with a mortgage and utility bills to pay etc etc. My loan and grant equal 6,500. I spend 15 a month on prescriptions and get no help with that. There are no jobs to be had where I live in the sticks and it has nothing to do with not presenting a worthy C.V.
Before my degree I was unemployed and at my last session at the Jobcentre I asked about claiming in the long summer break and was told no I would not be able to claim. After starting Uni a few people told me they thought that info was wrong so back I went again.....again was told nope you can't claim.
Anyway I noticed on the government web page that it says students doing degrees may be able to claim. so phoned up the advice line and YES apparently I should be able to. However we shall see I am not convinced becasue when I told her my previous experiences she became a tad unsure.
People at the jobcentre cannot be trusted, when I was still out of work they told me I could not do voluntary work at which point I got up, got the leaflet on volunteering from the twirly stand and stuck it in front of the advisors nose...."oh I never knew that , I do apologise"........Funnily enough I did apply for a job with them, didn't get it...far to intelligent and resourceful0 -
You can only claim after your degree has finished, unless you're a lone parent. (or part of a couple?)Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Most FT students cannot apply for JSA during the summer whilst studying for a degree:Jobseeker's Allowance
Full-time students
If you’re studying full time, you may be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance during the summer holiday if:- you're a lone parent
- you have a partner who is also a full-time student, and one or both of you is responsible for a child or young person, and
- you’re available for and actively seeking work
Part-time students
If you’re studying part time, you may be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance if you are:- out of work or working less than 16 hours a week on average
- capable of working
- available for work
- actively seeking work
- below retirement age
With regards to your prescriptions you may be eligible to apply for the low income scheme though most students have too much income for this. Even if you are not eligible for this, if you spend £15 on prescriptions every month it'd be cheaper for you to get a prepaid certificate as it is £104 for 12 months rather than £180 (15*12)0 -
no, you cant. i finished uni and went to claim, they worked out how long my loan would have lasted me if I borrowed the full amount on offer which was around £8000 (even though i only borrowed £500) so at that point I 'could' have still had £3000 to live off, If I had borrowed it.
which I hadn't. lolIt only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'
