students job seekers allowance

I thought this topic was more about what do you do if you can't get a job and do you get job seekers allowance. My thinking behind this is that there are jobs out there and everyone just has to get off there !!! and really go for it if they want one. This summer i have applied to over 30 jobs ranging from bars to dustbin man, cleaning local toilets, teaching English in language schools, Packing in factories both night and day shifts, working abroad for holiday companies, working for ferry companies, working at airports also applying for basically all the supermarkets and most of the high street stores and i am signed up to three recruitment agencies. So far after all that applying for about a month to try and land one i have got 2 interviews and one trial at a bar. Due to living in a small town when not at uni this is what i generally have to go through every summer and i hate it when people moan about not getting a job because everyone can as long as they get off there !!! and search everywhere for one. Also i have searched in Birmingham where i attend university and applied for a fair few there but no replies. You just have to keep your head up and keep badgering people because eventually they will realise how desperate you are and how annoying you will be if they don't employ you and will eventually give in and pay you the dosh even if it is crappy minimum wage for cleaning someones poo off the bathroom floor.(Yes i have done that at a campsite for 4.25 an hour it was fantastic.):j
That is my rant over cheersss.
Dave.
P.s sorry about the lack of punctuation and proper english being lazy.0 -
OP: PONDIE1
QUESTION: "are students able to claim this in summer if unemployed durin uni break"
who moved the goalposts....I've never seen a thread hijacked by so many that didn't adress the original question and so many regular posters contributing to the waywardness....lol....
I thought it was pretty straightforward...in fact not that different from a thread I posted a while back asking similar questions and suggesting the topic would be a suitable one (perhaps even as a sticky on the student forum) explaining to a lot of these students EXACTLY how they will be affected and what they can do....I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:0 -

My friend is a mature student who has no financial support from family. She has to pay her rent, books, food, travel etc from her student loan. Her rent is 90% of her loan (nothing is free - she will owe nearly £20,000 in tuition and loans when she graduates). She cannot get jobseekers allowance or income support over the summer (despite working for 10 years previously). She is not desperate 'enough' to qualify for additional uni bursaries or mature student assistance as there are so many people in need they have run out of cash. She will, and has, do any job she can get but in the current climate this proving really difficult. Not all students are lazy or financially stupid - some are just really struggling and I had hoped that MSE people would be less judgemental than this. I'm disappointed.0

My son has to do a 12 week unpaid placement during the summer before going back to uni in September. Are there any benefits or anything that he can claim to help him financially?0

Are you all sure you cannot get JSA ??? I have been asking lots of official sources this week, and reading all the websites and my impression was that you could get JSA and therefore Housing Benefit. The Woman at the Uni Money Advice Centre quite clearly stated that if you get a letter from your faculty saying your studies have finished for the year on a certain date then if you are seeking a job then you get JSA ....... am I missing something ?0

I suppose if you could get a letter from the uni saying that your not technically a student during the summer, you might be able to claim, but that would be shooting yourself in the foot really because then you would have to pay council tax for that period and would lose any other studenty advantages, so you might end up losing more than you would gain.0 -
However, if you can claim JSA then you can claim council tax benefit and housing benefit :-)0

You can get JSA when you've finshed your course but definitely not in the holidays. You have either misunderstood the Uni Advice Centre( more likely) or you've spoken to some new there. If this were the case then all students would have to pay council tax in the summer holidays!0
