cannot get bank account

Options
hello,
i have some serious issues. so i'll start from the top

In 2012 I had a halifax ultimate reward account with £100 overdraft, a halifax credit card with £500 limit and a vanquis credit card with £250 limit and a halifax ISA. all account were used and money was paid via direct debit to each credit card.

I was accepted to uni and decide to stick to halifax and open a new student account with them and downgrade my ultimate reward account to a normal reward account to save me £15 a month in fees.

Everything went smooth. got my new cards in the post and new pin. then afew days later my bank card stopped working and i was told it was a fraud stop and to call the next day during business hours.

halifax then told me the next day i have been re-assessed and do not meet the requirements to have an account with them and they dont want to deal with me anymore. they cancelled my current and student account and also my ISA immediately.

leaving me with a halifax credit card and a vanquis credit card. with no bank account i had no details to pass onto student finance england so no way of collecting my loan money. so borrowed cash of family members and used my savings.

I have failed every attempt at getting a bank account ever since. I opened one with my parents present at lloyds which they have banked with for over 20 years. everything went fine even got the card and pin but then they cancelled it.

I have checked my credit report and it is "poor" (creditexpert) with afew missed payments in my history but nothing of dire concern. any help on this issue would be great. i have not been able to collect £8000 worth of loans and bursurys from student finance and uni. it have been very stressful.

Good credit history with a few missed payments but nothing of dire concern?
Maybe you need to search how credit scoring works and realise a few missed payments put you as a high risk.

in 2011 vanquis accidently took 2 instead of 1 additional payments out of my account one day after the other causing me to go over my overdraft limit and being charged, it also casued me to be late with my mobile phone bill. after that i decided to pay my bills after the letters had landed. 3-4 were missed due to family deaths and generally just life. no defaults or anything of that nature but thanks for the burn on my first post

    cifas marker maybe?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

3-4 in a single year? No one will want to lend you money with such a poor track record of paying it back.

Grab your credit report from all 3 agencies and check for fraud markers as well. You should be able to get a basic bank account, but I doubt anything more.

Family deaths is no excuse for missing payments as I'm sure many people have had someone close in the family die and doubt that mean they'll forget to pay bills.

If Halifax have rejected you, you had nothing to gain by trying Lloyds, they're part of the same group and are unlikely to take a different view of your history.

If you genuinely have tried every bank, then you need to consider a building society savings account and investigate whether you have a CIFAS marker.

OP, unfortunately your understanding of the present credit market is very naive. It's a seller's market now, so banks and lenders will look for every reason to reject you, and with your missed payments record, however inconsequential you might think it to be, you are going to be way down the list above those with clean (or certainly cleaner) records.

  • Hi

If accounts are being opened (i.e. passing automated credit scoring) and you are finding them cancelled after receiving cards etc, I would guess you almost certainly have a CIFAS marker.

Many banks will open the accounts, get the cards issued etc whilst a different department investigates the CIFAS marker in the background. If not happy, they'll close the account.

I know this from experience. I fortunately found out about an erroneous CIFAS marker and got it and my potential account-closure sorted.

thank you for all the replys.

I have checked using experian's credit expert and see no sign of a CIFA's marker. will take your advise and check with all 3 credit scoring agency's.

I understand afew late payments is not good enough but now with no bank account making payments is very difficult. I'm using different friends account to pay my bills.

also i cannot recieve my student finance without a account in my own name.

I have tried the co-op, natwest, nationwide for bank accounts
