Tesco stock (or lack of)

I poped into my local Tesco earlier today to stock up on cat food. (one of my moggies is very fussy and will only eat certain foods, the main one being Whiskas "Oh so meaty, chicken).
Due to the extremely large number of different items held, they only keep a few of each, and of the one I wanted, there were only 4 sachets on the shelf.
I asked at the customer helpdesk to see when they would be getting more and was told that they would be getting another box of these on Tuesday.
I double checked and yes, they are getting one box which contains 24 sachets, which will probably sell out the same day.
I asked why they were getting so few and was told that this was because there is only room on the shelf for 1 box of each type of Whiskas, and they no longer hold any stock at the store as it's delivered as and when needed, and they wouldn't let me pay for it and then have it reserved.
It seems to be the same with many other items, such a large range but only a few of each actually on the shelf.

Tesco seem to have taken a leaf out of Argos stock policy. For a lot of general stuff Argos only hold 3 items per store. Sell one, and the computer orders one from the central warehouse or from the manufacturer. So a lot of times items can be out of stock.
The other problem is the number of facings on the shelves. By trying to sell anything and everything they reduce the facings to 1 per line and don't have the stock to back it up.The man without a signature.0 -
Go back and ask to put a customer order in. You pay for it in advance at the current price and it is ordered for you on top of the normal store stock. If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550

But OP asked to pre-order, and was refused this option.
They asked if they could pay for the stock coming in on Tuesday and was told no, a customer order would take a few days longer.
Hope that clears the issue up.If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550 -
Thanks; useful to know that's an option.
Mind you I would be taking my business elsewhere; if they have a demand for an item they are being rather foolish not to up their stock levels. Quickest way to lose customers, that!Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

I've found this too. Their stock policy online appears to be that if you buy a product two or three times they'll clear it from their warehouses and never restock it. Ever. My online 'favourites' are populated almost entirely by items which are "no longer available" and which I know from experience will never become available even if I were to check back every week for the next 20 years.0

I wonder why I wasn't told of this option at the helpdesk.
A lot of stores do not actively push the service as it is "hassle" and extra work.If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550 -
I get my cat food delivered from Amazon. I subscribe which means I have an order every month, so get a discount for this, and the difference in price between amazon and the supermarket is usually coppers with the added advantage that it is brought to my door.
