I am after some advice about what I would need to install CCTV in my fathers home, inside and out if poss but more importantly inside, following a recent external burglary.
I need to be able to monitor it from about 10 miles away (my home).
I have broadband but he does not - does that matter?
Is it something I can install myself?
Thanks.:o

If you want to view it from 10 miles away he'll need broadband.
There are cameras that just record to an SD card for viewing after the event (assuming they don't get knicked of course).0 -

Thanks. Can get him on cheap broadband no problem.
Any advice on what to do next, what equipment etc etc?0 -
How many cameras are you looking to have. Do you want to record the footage or just view remotely.
The cameras outside, what sort of area do you need them to cover - ie Front door, pathway, entire garden, and so on.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
Cheap broadband maybe too limited. Dont forget video uses a fair amount of bandwidth. Depending on how often you want to check it.
If buying camera's and a DVR though you wont need to monitor all the time will you?
Maplins had a deal on recently, But you can probably source a similar kit cheaper.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...1 -
If you want to monitor live over the internet, then you will really need an ip cctv camera with a static internet ip address, or a separate company that allows a generic login then reroutes. These now cost money.
Once you get more than one camera then again you quite often end up paying license fees for the software if you are recording onto a storage device.
tbh a lot of the cheaper cameras are fairly rubbish and decent camera/software soon racks up a bill.
Just take a look at the panasonic BL or HCM series - they still fetch £30+ per entry level camera secondhand. You might find wireless cameras have a poor wifi range and lock up when wifi lost, so wired lan through mains powerline adapters are more reliable.
Then there's the issue of night vision - will you have LEDs on the camera or a separate LED light...or a general motion sensor floodlight?1 -
Don't know if it helps, but I got this one about 1 year ago to use outdoors.
It records onto an SD card that you can view at a later time on a PC or laptop.

Maplin always have different deals on cctv stuff, you need a pvr that will do as many cameras as you get, and it needs to support remote monitoring via your smartphone. 4 camera systems are inexpensive, but you may want to upgrade some of the kit cameras to some better ones (better night resolution, etc). Go in the shop, tell them what you need, let them suggest something. You could have it all installed by tomorrow night.0

Eyespy247 cameras are really easy to set up and monitor remotely - usually on a special offer on Amazon, don't pay the full price on their site. They are pricier than the ebay cheapies, but are really good quality and easy to use.0

If this were me I probably wouldn't do it but if I really had to I'd use a Network ready DVR and up to 4 cameras. The DVR + a hard drive will cost ~£100 or so on eBay and each camera ~£27 if you go for waterproof dome cameras. You'll need some cables too unless you buy a kit.
All in all it will be a fair outlay if you add in the BB for probably very little extra security.
I have a couple of these cameras - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GT2082-DOME-METAL-INFRARED-OUTDOOR-WATERPROOF-CCTV-CAMERA-CCD-SONY-480-/180972905382?pt=UK_CCTV&hash=item2a22d363a6
One is a weathercam

I haven't made my security camera public but it uses the same camera type on a DVR similar to http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-Channel-Full-D1-Network-CCTV-DVR-Internet-Smartphone-Security-Monitor-H-264-/261127211605?pt=UK_CCTV&var=&hash=item3ccc650a55
IP cameras work directly to the web but are more expensive.0 -
Until the OP says what is required in more detail, then pointless saying this camera or that camera or that setup.
If you want to be able to identify someone then those dome camera at 480tvl with 3.6mm, the person would need to be 2 or 3 meters to identify anyone, even then they would have to be looking directly at the camera in almost perfect light.
Yes you can anything cheaper online, my only gripe with online is, sending anything back if it goes wrong.
So the OP needs to give a lot more detail, so people can then give decent recommendations.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0
