Combined postage question

I am listing several items of clothing that are ending this weekend. 1 buyer has already bought 6 items which now weigh over 1kg. I offered combined postage. If the item is over a kg then 2nd class postage is no longer an option and it could be cheaper to send 2 separate parcels @ cost of £2.20 parcel. Should I offer this as an option to to my buyer or just send 2 separate parcels and let them know when I I have sent them.
Can I still send a total invoice or should I send separate invoices for the separate parcels so they know what I am doing.
How much is reasonable to allow for packing and petrol. I added 29p on top of my postage £2.20 for each individual item. If the postage is £6.50 is it fair to round up to say £7.00 to allow 50p for my expenses.

Thanks

  • I think your maths is out, if charging 2@ £2.20, plus 29p each for postage, that makes a fiver.

That being said, I wouldn't be annoyed if you sent me a message to say it was being sent as two lots to save on postage. I've done it myself for items sent abroad as it was costing a good fiver less to do it that way.

If I sent 2 at £2.49 each for 750g each then it is cheaper(£5) than 1 at 1500g at £6.50 postage plus whatever expenses I add.
At the moment it might be cheaper to courier them. The total weight is now over 2kg and he is still bidding on several items yet to finish. I will wait till the end and give him the option. Thanks for your help

Just done another calculation and it is prob worth sending std parcel up to 20kg at £5.30 for 1 big bundle

I think you must have looked at the wrong chart. Standard arced at £5.30 will only cover p to 2 kg of weight.

Oh yes thanks I was a zero out. Still I could parcel up a 2kg parcel @£5.30. Plus a other parcel with the remaining items. Can I ask your opinion on charging 70p on my expenses and round up the cost to £6. Does this seem reasonable. There are about a dozen items in this package.

    Thanks

I don't think 70p is unreasonable if you are using good clean new bag.

Have you tried Myhermes courier service? You can send up to 5KG in weight for £4.50 and you can track the item too. I wouldn't have a problem with you rounding up the postage.

That sounds good, my only problem is that nearest myhermes is 10 miles away so how much I am charging for time and petrol. I have an excitable 2 yr old. I am getting a friend to pop round to babysit while I go to the post office. I am not sure I could be doing with a trip out to the courier shop too, especially as I want to get the stuff posted ASAP. It would be too much to try and do tomorrow. Worth keeping in mind tho.

    Thanks for your help.

They can collect from your house. There is a code which gets you 25% off your first order.

The buyer is told your postage costs before he bids. If he hasn't asked you about combining, then anything which reduces the amount he has to pay would be reasonable.

Postage is always paid by the seller unless the buyer wants a faster service than your normal offering.

Oh that's sounds good. I was selling lots of baby clothes and not expecting that people wanted to pay more than a pound as they would have to pay minimum of £2.20 for postage. So I stated in my listings to encourage people to make their own bundles that I would combine the postage. I sent them an email late last night after the bidding had ended. If the courier option is possible, what happens as I sent them an invoice last night for std parcel plus 1 package. Can i send them a new amended invoice. They had snt me a payment request as he wanted to pay this morning so didn't want to leave it overnight.
