Please help me possible Gas bill issue
Options
Hi People, hope all are well.
I really need some help. I think i have a major issue but need to work something out first.
Can someone please calculate what my gas bill should be?
I have checked online but not sure im doing it right. I just want clarification. My supplier is southern electric. Im on the 2yr Capped Price Plan 2 General Domestic tariff.
Meter reading 1 = 11029
Meter reading 2 = 11434
What should this cost?
My meter reads in cubic meters "m3"
Thanks in advance for any help.

It depends on how you pay
e.g. for pay on receipt of bill, just under £200 inc Vat but excluding standing charge which is about £100 per year
for monthly by DD, about £190 inc vat but excluding standing charge of about £60 per year0 -
And discounts for dual fuel, billing method etc. Price may vary depending where you are in the country too.

Thanks for the quick replys. Im in Bedfordshire and pay by direct debit with paperless billing.
The reason i asked is, i moved in to my new house in February and i checked my bill this month. First meter reading was submitted on 05-Feb and the second was on 14-March. I checked online and i have a bill for £191? This has totally confused and shocked me. Under 40 days of gas usage and a bill for £191. Me and the wife both work so hot water is switched on for 2 hours a day. Heating is used for 4 hours a day. Is this bill right? Am i reading it wrong?0 -

The price is about right (excluding standing charges and any other discounts that may apply)
But usage does seem quite high. How big a boiler do you have?
Are the 2 hours of water heating per day in addition to 4 hours of heating (or are they at the same time as the 4 hours of heating)?
If water heating is separate, are you using a lot of the hot water during those 2 hours?0 -
Hi -
To calculate:
Do you know the price you are being charged per kWh?
The daily standing charge?
The number of units you have used
= 405
To convert to kWh - usually -
is
[No.of units] x 39.3 x 1.02264 / 3.6
(shortcut is 1 unit = 11.16 kWh)
so 4521 kWh
This is the figure you need to multiply by your price per kWh charge, then you will need to move the decimal place to give £/pence.
Then for the number of days between the above readings, multiply by your daily standing charge as per your tariff.
The above added together plus VAT at 6% to give total billing amount for the time period.
Hope this helps; happy to do the maths for you if you want. If not, the above should give you a fairly close figure.0 -
Roughly this is what is in use per day.
The timer starts the boiler for central heating and water for 2 hours in the morning, water is switched of manually after 30 minutes when i get up. I use an electric shower so only half hour of hot water heating is needed just for washing up.
Boiler is a Potterton Suprima 70 and rated at 20kw energy rating "B"
In the evening the timer comes on for 4 hours, again the water is switched of after 30 minutes when i get in from work.
I went to my suppliers website and found this information.
Standard Energy (per kWh) 4.26p
Standing Charge (per day) 16.45p
If you google "southern electric our prices" it will show you the link to the page.
I had to edit the link as im a new user, it would not let me post it.
I would appreciate if you did the maths for me (was never my strong point)
So this bill is for 38days use correct or am i wrong?
At this rate my three month bill would roughly be £570?
One thing it does say on my online billing that the next billing period will be 14 Jun - 1 Jul 13.
So this bill im reading is for 1 month or an estimate up until 14 June?
Im not to pleased with the online bill tbh, I have use donline billing for loads of utilities before but this one is poor to say the least, hardly any information avaialble.
I really appreciate the help people.0 -
It sounds like your big boiler is working flat out for 6 hours a day.
At 20kW thats a total of 120kWh of heat per day ... that's a lot of heat going somewhere.
But the cost is correct.0 -
Well, the maths I have done work it out to be -
4521 kWh x 4.26 (per kWh charge)
= £192.59
plus 38 days x 16.45
= £6.25
(plus VAT - unless your tariff figures are inclusive?)
As I'm sure you know or can see, the usage averages out to 10 units per day, I would hope that there is something amiss but am afraid to say that the bill amount is probably correct - BUT -
the usage high - especially for the times you have the boiler on.
Are all your thermostats working correctly - in use at all? (The boiler one would need checking by a professional I guess....). The boiler should not need to be fully active for the hours it is programmed to be on if your thermostats (boiler, rooms, radiators) are working properly...
I am assuming that your boiler is not a combi as the water would be on demand...
(For comparison: I know for sure that my boiler is dodgy and inefficient - although has passed it's checks; it comes on and off over 190 times (fires up, stays on a minute, goes off) during the 16 hours (! yes, you read that right) that it is on. And yet, the usage is usually less than 5 cubic metres/day and cost is around £15/week - with a daily standing charge nearly 2x yours.)0 -
Why two hours heating water for just two people, are you having the world's longest showers? How well insulated is your hot water tank? What temperature are you maintaining the house at in the evening, are you heating rooms you barely use? How well insulated is the property, are you paying to heat the street?Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0

Thanks for all the help. I think my bill is correct but it shocked me that it could be so high.
Since i moved in, moneys a bit tight becase of the move and everything. I have done the following.....
The boiler control for temperature is on dot 6 out of 12.(12 being hottest)
The thermostat in the hallway is set to 20 degrees.
All the unused radiators (3) in rooms we dont use, thermostats are turned totally down.
The insualtion is very thick in the walls and roof, was done recently with 25 year gurantee.
Im going to try something else. Im going to leave the thermostat set to 15 degrees in the hallway when no one is at home and turn it up to about 20 degrees when we get in then turn it don to 17 when we go to bed. The thing i forgot to mention was we were using the coal effect gas heater for about 1 hour a day which i will now stop and i think this may have caused the hgh usage as its burning pure gas so to speak. Im going to try this for a few days and see what effect it has on our usage.
I have read the report about turning on the boiler only when you need it but im going to try it this way keep it on all the time but at a certain temperature so the boiler will come on and off when it has to. The water will on y be turned on for about 1 hour total a day.
As of now the meter reasding is 11440.
Thanks again for all the help.0
