socks-i had my yaris for 3 years without a problem but then the transmission light suddenly went on and it popped itself into neutral without warning- leaving me without control.

more people have had this problem with the mmt verso corolla and there is a thread on the forum about it in the toyota owners club- my problem was exactly the same as the others described and i would not be surprised if there was an investigation and/or more in the media about this at some point.

I bought mine because it was so much cheaper - so much so i could afford a new car instead of second hand... but saftey first. that and repairs to transmission once its out of warranty are astronomical.

but it did the neutral thing twice and finally (remember its a 'clutchless' manual the clutch actually burned (itself?) out and i had it fixed and traded it in.

    Thanks for the info...

The Yaris I looked at is described as 'freetronic', is that the same as MMT? Been doing a search and there aren't too many used Yaris for sale in my area. I'm searching MSE chat forums for more info on Yaris to see what I can find. Desperately need a car as my accident has made mine useable but unroadworthy.

Spending 6k on a small car seems like madness to me. It'll be worth tuppace in a couple of years.

Why? As an example my dad was looking for a new car recently. He's had loads of Mercs and BMWs and found the dealers to be nothing special. He's a high mileage crusty and not bothered about image or what the neighbours think. So he looked at a £30k BMW 3 series and a pre-registered £14k Vectra Estate 1.9CDTI Elite Auto. His reasoning was that the Vectra was more comfortable and that in 3 years/high miles the BMW would be worth £10k and the Vectra would be worth £4k - so either losing £20k on a badge or £10k on another perfectly acceptable car. So if a £6k car has a residual value of £2k in 3 years what's the problem?!:D

    4k.

You dad has saved money, but nowhere near as much as he could.

Just my take on it. Small cars cost less to start with, so obviously cost less to buy 2nd hand. You could get a very nice reliable older small car for a couple of grand and let someone else loss their 5 or 6k for you.
