Changing name on V5C logbook after marriage?

The wifes car tax came today - in her old name. She'd forgotten to change her V5C, though i'm sure she did her car licence.

Anyway i know you have to [annoyingly] pay to change your photo on the licence. From what i've read, changing your name after marriage is free, but as it's also free to ask here, i just want to double check that that is totally correct?

Would she need to send off a copy of the marriage certificate or can she just send an explaining letter?

  • Should be free but what you don't want is a dvla !!!! up where they potentially devalue the car by adding another keeper.

How long will she keep the car?

The only real important thing is does the name on the licence match any insurance she is on?

Legally you can call yourself anything you want as long as it's not done to hide anything. The tax reminder reached the person it was sent to so I'd be inclined to leave it.

She intends to keep it until it's broken beyond repair. It's a 2002 Corsa C 1.2. Not worth a million pounds as it is.

Will check her insurance but i'm sure they match.

So even if they !!!! up and added another keeper it wouldn't be the end of the world.

I'd also check your policy if she is named on that.

Its free to change the name on the v5c and also your licence. Changing the v5c doesn't add on an additional keeper.

If you have any expired points then they will be removed for free as well.

Changing your address on your licence shouldn't remove your bike entitlement. But it's happened to many.
