I've had my Motorolla V220 for about 7 years, small basic phone - I don't do texts or need internet access, so this has been ok although it takes crap photos and can't download them. Today the phone says it can't recognise the sim, don't know what's going on and thinking about getting another PAYG. I don't use a mobile very much but always feel safer carrying one for emergencies, would like one that takes decent photos that I CAN download. I'd be interested in knowing what the problem is with my mobile, if anyone can tell me, but would also like recommendations on a good fairly basic PAYG.
many thanks.

You can get handsets that meet your needs from about £15 (see the relevant sites) .
Have you been able to download your pictures from the Moto in the past?0 -
I don't think that a £15 phone will have a decent camera.
There were some suggestions in this thread: Best 'simple' mobile on PAYG0 -
I got a ZTE KIS for christmas this year and for £50 (including £10 credit, so £40 phone) I have been VERY impressed!
You have to get it on virgin mobile, which might be annoying but I haven't had any problems since moving my number to them from Orange (they give you 100 free minutes if you move an existing number). When I bought the phone it came with unlimited internet for 12months but looking at the site I'm not sure if they are still doing this deal. (Although personally I connect to the home Wifi a lot more than the 3G mobile internet.)
It has a decent camera (3.2MegaPixel) and comes with an OK memory card (2GB). As it is a smartphone you can download different (free) apps to give filters etc to your pictures and make them look very professional. I would recommend one called 'Pixlr Express' which is free and very easy to use.
The BIG problem with this phone is it has a very small amount of internal memory. This means any apps you download should be moved to your memory card to save space. However, by the sounds of it you won't be using many apps so I can't see this being a problem for you.
What you might want to consider is that smartphones these days often have very short battery lives in comparison to phones from 7 years ago - saying this I have been extremely impressed with the KIS. It says the standby time is 250hours, and from personal experience the phone can go 2-3 days without a recharge from moderate use, which is very good compared to iPhones etc which sometimes don't last the day!
