On this one, i would have to say Yes. :)

Its just a matter of personally opinon on the right route to take,

and the OP can decide whatever she feels is the right way to approach it.

I use a laptop in an industrial setting and mine have survived numerous drop and general knocks.

I’ve never had hard drive fail from being dropped (and once dropped a machine off a 8 foot high gangway. The laptop exploded, bits everywhere but the drive survived)

I have had the drive dislodged from it’s connector so I would certainly check that before anything else. If it is really broken then either take it back to the shop or check your household insurance.

It isnt fraud, the OP goes in saying it isnt working there is no lie or fraud in that just stateing the truth. If I could count the number of PC's I have been to repair when the user "did nothing it just happend or stoped working" I fix it under maintanence or whatever.

Shops like Dixion stores group and Comet are just box shifters, you return somthing as faulty it goes in the faulty corner untill someone returns it to the manufacturer if they bother most just end up scrapped they make so much money on everything and get stuff for next to nothing its not worth the hassle.

As for Laptops should be tough enough to withstand drops etc, if you want a laptop to bounce you buy a panny toughbook and you pay through the nose for it. you cant expect the current trend of £300 laptops to be anywhere near the quality of the toughbooks but they should be up to somthing.

I would return it to the store without a question, It is doubtfull the store will open the laptop and open the drive and see shattered platters anyway they will stick it on the faulty shelf and maybe return it to the manufaturer.

When a laptop is off or in standby, the hard drive is locked against it's internal parts moving. Plus don't forget to try your home contents insurance.
