Car Hire and Spouses

I have booked car hire in the US many times and still don't fully understand it, hence I felt a bit ripped off last year.
There are four of us (2 married couples) travelling in the US and Canada this year.
Previously our car hire insurance has covered the person who is hiring the car and their spouse.
Last year I got what I thought was a great deal until I picked the car up, only to find that I was insured as I was the one hiring the car, but my husband was not and I would have to pay extra for him.
Now the question is this, when I book the car hire this year do I add 1 extra driver because thier spouse is automatically covered or 2 extra drivers because it is only the spouse of the hirer that is automatically insured?
What do you think? And what have been your experiences in this area?

Well it depends on what you book in the first place.

Last year I booked with Alamo & the deal included up to 3 additional drivers just by doing a google search for a promo code.

Look on the terms & conditions to see what's included before you book.

Plenty have deals where it includes a spouse you just need to check you're getting one of these.

I'm pretty sure that only the spouse of the person hiring the car is covered. If you add an additional driver, that is all you are doing. It won't include their spouse.

As above though, you would need to check the specific T&C's to be sure.
