Where to go in Europe for a 4 night break?

Hi

Its my boyfriend's birthday in May and unfortunately he has to go away for work for the weekend, so I'm looking to book a few days away the weekend before to make up for us not being able to spend his actual birthday together. I would really like to book a city break somewhere in Europe - can anyone suggest any destinations? I am thinking a sunny destination would be nice but am welcome to all suggestions!

We could fly from Stansted or Luton and would be looking to go around Thursday 9th May for 3 or 4 nights.
Havent got a budget as such, it will just be what I can save between now and then, so the more reasonable the better :) I guess I would like to find something for less that £300 per person for flights and hotel.
We are both in our early 30s and would like somewhere relaxing and where we can have a nice meal and drink and wander round in the evening, and do some sightseeing in the day.

Suggestions very welcome!!

Thanks in advance!

Lea

I've done Rome & Venice for 3 nights each in the past year both through BA holidays.

    There's also Barcelona, Madrid?

Venice for me every time. Stunning and the weather will be lovely at that time of year.

Krakow gets my vote. Pretty town, a lot of history in town and nearby. Good food and not overpriced.

How about Barcelona? We've booked a 4 night break there at the end of May via BA Holidays during their sale, not sure if the sale is still on for City Breaks but worth a look, although they don't fly from Stansted or Luton so have you thought of other airports?

Ljubljiana in Slovenia is wonderful, small town with good restaurants and a castle, and you're a short train ride from Lake Bled which is beautiful. Lots of stunning scenery nearby.

Other than that I'd suggest Istanbul, incredible city.

    Thanks everyone!
These suggestions are great. For some reason, Lisbon is looking really appealing so am going to look into that further!

    Thanks for your help,

I second Krakow. An amazing city, we have just returned from a short break there.

Our first visit was last year in May. We left a cold and raining England and landed in Krakow to 25C and sunny.

So much beautiful things to see so much history to learn about if that is your thing.
The exchange rate is better than the Euro.
About 4.5zl to the pound and food and drink is cheap over there.

When we first visited we budgeted £50 a day for both of us and that was plenty for lunch and dinner.

Also there are stunning places like Wieliczka salt mines to visit. They have been on Unesco since 1978 and Krakow is also on the list.

I cannot recommend Krakow enough to people. I would say its the best city I have ever visited.
