Parkers values the car (in working order) at £900 private sale. I just can't see the point spending £500 to fix it. It ideally needs other stuff too - brake pads, etc. Thanks for the help anyway everyone. :(

Your looking at it the wrong way......
It's not about the value of the car, it's about how much it'd cost to find another car and potentially have somebody else's faults dumped on you.

People (those who don't buy brand new every 12 months) tend to shift cars when they look to be costing a lot of money in repairs, so the likely hood of picking up more faults than your old car had, is quite high indeed.

It's almost always "better the devil you know".

The thread linked to in post #3 would suggest that clutch and gearbox can and do break together?

As for symptoms, the clutch was just sticky/juddering for a while. Then when it went the engine was making horrible noises and then the car smelt of burnt clutch. It now only starts in gear. Halfords say there is a "hole in the gearbox".

Nah, the thread from post #3 says that even with the abuse of being forced into 1st gear at 50mph the gearbox was fine.

Having said that, even Halfords should be able to diagnose a "hole in the gearbox" so that's not looking good.

I'd still want a second opinon and if the gearbox is broken then find a garage/mobile mechanic that will source & fit a scrapyard box. Recommendation from friends & family id the best way to find one

I'd guess they haven't done any serious dismantling so their charges should be minimal
  • forget valueations online as values change weekly.

i can remeber last year looking at a decent stilo 6speed 1.2 active 2004 model that was on the forcourt for £2695.00 and the stilo is a decent solid car faoured not for looks but is reliable easy maintenance car.
i think putting £500 into a car is worth it if its goes on to last two or three more years trouble free.

if you think of it its just about the same price if you had it serviced and timing kit and water pump done, so the cost is about the same as if it were a mojor service.

kiwck fit will charge strip down, if you dont want anywork to go ahead you simply call and tell them NO WORK TO COMMENCE ON REPAIR, and with them agree out a final price so you can have the car taken from there.

Please do not throw any more money at this car, they will certainly charge for a diagnosis, but ebaying it and getting something else now will save you in the long run.

Something else that could need a clutch 1 month down the line, meaning the same situation?

Unless doing it yourself or getting very good rates from a trusted local fixer, the OP would end up with a four figure repair bill for a fixed car valued by its weight.

I'd enlist a good, cheap local garage to do it, a clutch change shouldn't be more than £500 if this is done. :)
