Clutch and gearbox gone

Fiat Stilo - clutch and gearbox have gone. Something about a hole in a plate? We have no idea about these things. Halfords have quoted something like £1400 - the car is barely worth that much. We only took it to Halfords because the AA man needed to know where to take it and we didn't know any other garage nearby. Is this price about right (in which case the car is basically a write off) or can it be done cheaper?

Sadly, it maybe beyond economical repair to you, Stilo's often got at good prices, so the cost of repair, maybe equal or more than the same year equivalent, or you can stick with the 'devil you know'.

Try to get the price from an independent garage -

£200 or less for a gearbox. £100 for a clutch and £250 fitting.

Maybe less if you shop around.

Get it moved to a proper garage.

Another way is to go to a parts shop and ask if they can recommend someone who fits clutches. I had my car done recent and the total was £255 and I drive a honda. I ended up going to a garage.

Nearly went to Mr Clutch, even made an appointment, then started surfing....

I'd also add that in 35+ years of driving and repairing my own cars I've worn out clutches and broken gearboxes but never the two together.

    What were the symptoms?

The thread linked to in post #3 would suggest that clutch and gearbox can and do break together?

As for symptoms, the clutch was just sticky/juddering for a while. Then when it went the engine was making horrible noises and then the car smelt of burnt clutch. It now only starts in gear. Halfords say there is a "hole in the gearbox".

These prices you quote, are they for new parts sourced by the garage? I wouldn't have a clue where to start with getting hold of second hand parts and then finding a garage that will fit them for me.

link above i would recommend putting in your reg to give exact parts you require.

as for labour i would say 230 on a good day £260 when things get busy or something take a bit longer to get off.

yell.com for a garage near you or a good mobile mechanic to do it on the drive or street outside your house and keep an eye on and supply him with endless cuppa's

Parkers values the car (in working order) at £900 private sale. I just can't see the point spending £500 to fix it. It ideally needs other stuff too - brake pads, etc. Thanks for the help anyway everyone. :(

Two final questions. Halfords just said to leave the car with them and they'd call me back with a quote. Obviously I don't want the work done now, but they have still spent time taking the car apart in order to give me a quote. Are they going to charge me for the time they've spent looking at it so far? If so, how much should I expect to pay when I pick the wreck up?

Also, the car is now stranded at Halfords. I need to get it back here but it is not drivable. Will they deliver it back to me on a truck or something if I ask them? For a fee maybe? Do they do this?
