If you weren't living there at the time and don't know the person they were looking for then it's nothing to do with you and you have nothing to worry about. It's very doubtful they will give you any further information on the investigation as that is going to be confidential information.
As for the time period, sometimes in these cases people don't dare come forward to report it until many years later so the police can only start investigating when it reported to them. They've checked your house as the last known address, the person is obviously not living there anymore so it's unlikely they will come back now.

I googled the number before ringing it and it isn't a police station number. I think it is just the number for the office where that particular police officer works. I googled the police officers name and several news stories came back so I know that the person I talked to is definitely a police woman. How would they get the previous occupiers lawyers details? Sorry, I've never had any contact with the police before so I have no idea what happens during an investigation! ^_^

What you've got there is proof that the named policewoman exists. Call the local police station, and find out if that number is one on their list.

I'm confused that you would join a money saving site to ask such questions

    For goodness sake...

The police are carrying out an investigation and asked you some questions - you have answered them.

They will come back to you if they need anything more from you - otherwise, get a grip and move on... nothing to see.

I presume that OP is asking here because she is familiar with the site and knows that a lot of helpful advice is given here (some unconnected to money saving!). Also, being asked this sort of thing can be very worrying & upsetting, even if you know it is nothing to do with you.
    OP:
Allegations will be followed up as soon as possible after they were made. There is often a considerable time lag.
A distressed child, especially after some time may be very confused about names & addresses (they may, for instance give directions from a landmark rather than an actual address): following up "possibles" is part of the investigation.
As others have said, the police have checked your address out, realised that you know nothing and will, if appropriate, be tracing the previous owner / tenant / associates of.

I hope that you are reassured by the advice you have received here. If not, you could approach either the police officer who called, or a police member of the Safeguarding Children Board. You don't want to waste their time, but if you explain as briefly as possible that the enquiry worried you, they will reassure you (obviously they can't give you details)

Deleted post, thought I'd get some advice here but obviously not lol
  • We had a police detective turn up here a year ago. Two plain clothed police officers. Showed me their cards. They asked to speak with the people who used to live here. He was a pathologist several decades ago and had appeared as a witness in a coronors case following a murder in the 1960s. I didn't pass on the forwarding address instead i called up the local police station and asked to be transferred to the detective so i knew they were legitimate.

Then called the old occupier hoping not to shock him now in his 80s to give him the number of the detective.

So it does happen that police will turn up out of the blue it is often the only way they can do their detecting.

I would just give them the name and number of your landlord and let them find out the solicitors details that way

But then again why would they open a police investigation for something that happened so long ago?!

Erm, because a crime was committed? Seriously OP, it's nothing to do with you, the police don't waste their time fitting innocent people up*

*l just know someone's going to respond saying their best friends neighbours aunties cousin was fitted up for something.... :D

Btw how do you know it's a child protection investigation? Police don't usually offer up information.

    Happy moneysaving all.

Not uncommon to tell you what department they are from if they are conducting an investigation

I have no idea what the OP's first post contained, but all I can see is a lot of helpful posts from other members, and a lot of deleted posts from the OP in a huff because nobody was helpful!
