Laptop screen repair - stuck and confused

Hi,
I am trying to repair a friends laptop. The screen is very dim on booting. An external monitor works fine. Searching the internet showed that was likely to be a faulty inverter, so I dutifully bought one.
When I dismantled the lid I could not see an inverter. The wires went straight from the back of the monitor to the MoBo. On further internet searching I found that this could be because it was a CCFL screen and the backlight had gone. I was informed that the way to tell if it was a CCFL screen was if there were two wires coming out to a white plug (power for the backlight). It didn't have this either
SO I am stumped. I haven't found anything online that describes and advises on the issue I have. No inverter and no backlight.
The machine is a Compaq Presario CQ56, the screen is an LG (model no. lp156wh2)
Can anyone advise? Is the inverter built in to the screen workings, so I have to replace the entire screen? If anyone has had a similar experience, or knows what I need to do I would be most grateful
Thanks for any help

No lcd inverter in cq56 how come

It sounds like it's an LED screen, in which case you won't find a separate inverter board because it doesn't have one. LCD uses a separate inverter board because of the high voltages required for illuminating the 'tubes', LED doesn't.0
