getting out of an o2 contract

hi, just wondering if any knows how to or has broken a contract with o2 before? I got an online contract in October 2005, upgraded last October and now i want a new handset with a different provider for a better deal. i have spoken to o2 who said it would cost £124 to cancel the contract basically pay off the rest of my contract and they can't offer me the phone i want on a better deal. does anyone know if this can be done without having to pay anything??

you cant get out of the contract without paying off the remaining months, but you can switch to the lowest tarrif then pay it off
