Vent: Grrreggs!

Popped into Greggs the bakers the other day for breakfast. I'm (embarrassingly 5/7 ) a regular customer. Normally I have the £2 sandwich/coffee deal which is tasty and good value. Unfortunately my partner and my doctor both think I should be more health aware and bacon and sausage butties don't qualify.

So, having looked at the app (yes, there really is one) I decided to go for the porridge/juice combo advertised at £2. Got to the till and the nice lady asked for £2.25. I queried it and she said that Greggs had put the price up. Now, being a big lad, and being ravenous, I forked out the extra. When I got home I checked the app again and the mobile website and the main website. The deal was still there at £2.

I sent an email to their customer services and got a reply saying basically " there, there, fat lad, prices go up you know" and that they'd only raised a few, not all of them.

Sent one back saying I didn't object to the price rise, it was the misadvertising I objected to and received a reply saying they were disappointed that I wasn't happy and they'd pass my comments on to the retail department.

Went in today and asked the price - still £2.25. Looked online and still advertised as £2. Told them I'd not bother and went to mucky d's.

Am I being unreasonable to expect to get the deal as advertised , especially after telling them about the mistake? Or do I just bite the bullet cos their porridge is WAY better than mac d's ?

I'd be doing my own at home in the microwave and putting it in a plastic container to take with me.
But if you don't want to do that, I'd go to MacD's. Stuff Greggs, there is a principle here, they got you in there by falsehoods. :)

TBH I'd be having a sneaky bacon sarnie.

Report the app ad to the ASA? It's only instant porridge, try buying a pot of that and add your own hot water.
  • For me, the price isn't the problem.
It's not even the fact that it's been mis-represented.

Mistakes happen - that's a fact of life. We're not measured by the mistakes we make, but by the efforts we take to address them.

The fact that Greggs didn't seem to care enough to
    a) do anything about it
    b) be courteous to you, a paying customer
would be the thing that really got my goat!!

    Manners cost nothing!

  • Isn't there some rule that says if it's advertised at £x, you only need to pay £x?

As mentioned above the best thing would be to contact the Advertising Standards Authority; http://www.asa.org.uk/Consumers.aspx

    Sadly not.

However it is an offence under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. Mistakes are one thing, but deliberately leaving the wrong price up is another.

Delete all saddo apps from your smartphone, make your own porridge in the microwave, spend the small fortune you save over the course of a year on something saucy undies, job done.
