Completely confused what deal is best!

I'm trying to decide what broadband supplier to go with & would appreciate any comments/advise on the following deals I've found.
A bit of background first, I don't have a modem though have a wireless card in my laptop, and predominently use the internet for surfing, email etc, although I will hopefully be downloading some music too (once I find the lead for my MP3 player!)
We've just had Sky tv installed & I was hoping to get their broadband, but it's not available in my area yet - they reckon at least 6 months before it's available, so part of me wants an easy-to-get-out-of contract for when it becomes available. I've got a BT line installed.
Deals I've found:
PlusNet - 8Mb, 1GB download cap, free modem (if you stay for a year), 1 month notice required to leave, £9.99 per month
UKOnline - 1Mb, unlimited download, no modem/router, £25 set up fee, 12 month contract, £9.99 per month
AOL Silver - 2Mb, unlimited download, free wireless router, 12 month contract, £14.99 per month
So, my daft questions are...
How much difference does 1Mb, 2Mb & 8Mb really make in real terms?
How much surfing/downloading does a 1GB cap allow?
Is a wireless router just a router, so will I still need to buy a modem?
Any help very gratefully received!

You could try and get the £5:00/month Sky Connect offer, it is sometimes available where an exchange is due to be unbundled within 6 months.

I've emailed Sky about the £5 Connect, but not holding out much hope as I would have thought they'd offer it when I emailed before if they were trying to get my custom. Checking their reply they said it wasn't planned for "at least 6 months" so I'm guessing they don't have an actual date as yet, so don't want to get stuck with a load of people on a cheapo contract!Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06
