should you give jobs to friends and family?

I believe in helping your friends and family first in any job that one needs etc so i have always given work to them. however i have noticed that this has always only been one way. I now feel i dont want to bother. a friend of mine says she never gives work to friends as it ruins friendships. I believe that if the friend is desperate for work why should they not get this?
My dad said apparently to my mum that he did not want to give a garage conversion to do because he thought my partner was too lazy. (they are divorced and he has a new partner who i believe is extremely jealous and does not want us to benefit in anyway as she has never made any efforts and my dad practically ignores me and my daughter - she is 3 and he has never bothered to call us up or anything ..no birthdays no nothing. so who is the mad one here?
any ideas or thoughts appreciated...

Depends.
A friend of ours is a builder and I trust him completely to do the job properly first time round and get on with it fast and cost effectively.
However, I once gave a job to another friend - simple admin job - that ended our friendship. Basically she was slow, thought she had a cushty number being best mates with the boss and let me down. I was surprised that she was surprised when I sacked her.0 -
no no no!!!!
i have seen to many friends and family fall outs to know that it hardly ever works. My cousins husband asked me to go and work for there business and i turned them down!! I would never ever work for a friend or family member.0 -
I was asked to work for a friend who started up his own business. He worked with me for nearly a decade and I do what he needed. This has worked out well, as I am fine with his quirks, he is fine with mine and I really appreciate the opportunity. The only problem was that there were certain things computer wise I was not as advanced on as he thought, but overall it was better for him to get someone with the right mindset for the position, and better the devil you know.
Family or friends you have never worked with on the other hand could be a potential nightmare.Annabeth Charlotte arrived on 7th February 2008, 2.5 weeks early

I think it definitely changes the dynamics of the relationship and as long as both parties act professionally when it matters then it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Speaking on a personal basis I 'think' a good word was put in for me when I went for my present job by a friend who was high up in the Company and to a certain extent it came back to bite me on the behind a few weeks ago when I saw my exact same job advertised with another organisation but with a much higher salary. For many reasons, which did include the fact that I didn't know how much of a good word she had put in, I decided not to go for it and whilst it was a bitter pill to swallow at the time I know I did the right thing.
If we do meet socially she never tells me anything that I shouldn't be privvy to and I never tell her what's happening when she's not in the Office!
Of course the one disadvantage is that I can never throw a sickie !!!!!2014 Target;

I'm employed by a friend, it works really well. I was a bit worried to start with, so I said to him "if I mess up, you'd better treat me the same as everyone else". He just laughed

We didn't make a special effort to keep work and friendship separate, it just kind of worked out. When we're both in the office at the same time, we seem to automatically go into 'work mode', then switch back to just mates when the work's done.Bulletproof0 -
My view is that employing or working for Family does not work and that the friends bit is a dodgy one also,i don't recommend .don't get mad do yoga0

I would say no too. I got a job for my sister with the company of a woman I worked for. Sister only went for 2 days, then said it was boring and didn't go again. I was left with egg on my face, feeling very embarased. I also got jobs for some friends doing canvassing work and they were unreliable. so now I wouldn't do it at all.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

I work with my sister at the moment (only part time) and we get on fine with it. We are both very professional and so far it has only benefitted us both. I think it really depends on the people though.0
