Hi, I have bought a morphy richards breadmaker, all thanks to this site and reading all the good advice. I was just wondering if i could use the yeast that the supermarkets give you at the bakery section? if i can how much do i use? and how long will it last? Thanks :rotfl:

Hi
Yes, you can use the yeast from the supermarket bakery, I used about a teaspoon of yeast, and my loaf was lovely.
Not sure how long you can keep it - I asked the question on here and was told to keep it in the fridge and throw it when it didn't smell right. Mine still looked OK after a week, but I didn't want to risk using so threw it away. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -
Hi, Thanks i will give it a go, if it goes wrong no harm done lol0

I think (not 100% sure because I've never tried it) that you can only use the fresh yeast if you are baking the bread straight away and that it won't work if you're using the timer. Hopefully someone who knows more will come along soon and correct me if I'm wrong.
Sue, have you seen this thread that has lots of tips for using the Morphy Richards breadmaker? The Morphy Richards fastbake BM Club

I think Pink-winged is correct, I made my bread without using the timer and it was nicer than the loaves I have made using dried yeast. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0

I use supermarket fresh yeast - and I keep it in an ice cube tray in the freezer.
It works just fine
Just pop yourself a cube out every time you need to make a loaf.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't keep it in the freezer as it stopped it rising ?You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -
You can freeze fresh yeast, it won't do it any harm and it's a great way of keeping some handy. Just make sure you seal it up well - I do mine in a small plastic bag and try and get as much air out as possible.0

I keep mine for about a week, and it's fine. Asda give me a huge portion , so I usually freeze 10g at a time in bags. I found that frozen yeast doesn't work quite as well for me, as I use just over 5g when it's fresh. I start mine off in a bit of water with a level tsp sugar. Does anyone just use it without starting it off?
You can't use it with a timer, as it would start working straight away.0 -
I used mine without starting off - I just put all the ingredients into the BM as usual, and switched on.You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0
