The section you need to look at is about liability. Most will exclude consequential loss
It makes no difference, they can't exclude you from your statutory rights.
You should present them with your original receipt to prove you had the keys cut and ask them to refund you so you can get new keys cut for the other barrel.
They will most likely say no, but a friendly reminder about you rights to consequential losses might help.

Yeah right, that happens all the time.

In any case, this would be for the retailer to prove, which they haven't done, so it has no effect on the OPs query.

After writing to them on 12th March they are now trying to use the "inferior keys may have resulted in the breakage of the barrel" :(

Hate to say it but......I did think they might.

But the new keys hadn't been used in it, only when the actual key failed did we try the other 2 originals and the extras

Guess its upto us to prove the new keys hadnt been used, and them to prove the failure was due to inferior keys.

Unfortunately they only have your word for that and there's absolutely no way, having already admitted to them that you had the inferior keys cut, that you can prove you didn't use them.

I guess you could get a report from an independent lock smith, but that might just be throwing good money after bad?

I think they have you over a barrel (no pun intended :o)

I have sought advice from CAB, so will wait to hear back. I only have their word that inferior keys could have caused the problem. They haven't proved it and I doubt they can now, as for the old barrel I assume its gone to the scrap now.

The thing that is annoying is, they now say I could have asked for extra keys in advance of having the door fitted, however they didn't make me aware of this beforehand.

It is something I've been told happens by two different locksmiths when the lock on my front door has broken, and both times generic keys were used, but that's not to say that all locks are so fussy. TBH, I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference until it happened to me. On a Yale lock for example the keys either work, or they don't, and if they do they carry in working.

Do you have a proper lock shop near you that you can ask it it's known to happen to those particular locks? They may say they've never known it to happen, which will strengthen your case.

If they said you could have more keys before, why can't you have them for the new barrel? That makes no sense on their part.

They never mentioned the option to buy extra keys when we placed the order, they mentioned, letterbox, door trimmings ect, but nothing anbout extra keys, thats whats making me annoyed now.

I hope you mean making yourself annoyed for forgetting to ask them about extra keys - to expect them to offer everything you might need is pure madness.

Your comment is not helpful, and NO I don't mean annoyed for forggeting to ask, they where selling the product, usually they like to make money out of customers, so seeing they were making money out of the sale of the door, frame, window, letterbox, handle & trimmings, I would have thought they would have offered to sell us extra keys if required so they could make more money!
