Whose responsibility

We got a new door fitted, and proceeded to get 6 keys cut at £20. Within a week, the barrel of the door has seized, we can still lock and unlock the door from the inside but not the outside. The company are replacing the barrel, however they will not reimburse us for the keys we had cut.
We will have to pay another £20 for 6 new keys.
Where do we stand?

    What does your contract state?

Most will exclude secondary losses but if it doesnt then you can pursue them. Obviously you have to weigh up your time and effort -v- £20

Not had chance to dig the contract out. The door had been fitted less than a week when the lock seized, obviously they supplied us with 3 keys, but we needed a further 6 keys for family members at an extra cost of £20

Where did you get the keys cut? Was it from an authorised dealer using genuine blanks or on the high street using generic ones?

I think it was on the high street, but even the original keys (3) wouldnt work in the door

    Found the contract,

    14. The company guarantees for the period that the customer remains in occupation of the installation for the following:

14a. In cases of outward opening windows the company guarantees for a period of 10 years from the date of installation to replace or repair free of charge any PVC extrusion which proves defective due to faulty workmanship or faulty materials.

14b. The company similarly guarantees insulating glass for 10 years and all hardware for 10 years except door barrels which carry a 1 year guarantee. Any guarantee will only take effect once full settlement of the contract has taken place.

This is the only bit of the contract relating to the door and barrel i can see.

You may have broken the lock with inferior keys.

Yeah right, that happens all the time.

In any case, this would be for the retailer to prove, which they haven't done, so it has no effect on the OPs query.

This site suggests you can claim for consequential loss: http://www.consumerline.org/legislation/?item=Sale

An original keys wouldn't work, after the door had been initially locked by an original key from the outside, thats why i tried all original keys and then the extra keys. Even if the inferior keyhad broken the lock, surely it wouldnt open and lock from the inside. they said it was a barrel fault.

Yes, your're right, it does, it happened to me with a very expensive lock when my mum got a key cut in Timpsons.
