No idea what letter is asking for...

Hello all, my apologies, I've no idea where to post this.
I have a creditor after me for a £299 loan. I stopped repaying all my loans over 7 years ago and went into agreements with all companies at the time.
I thought I was nearing the end of paying off the smaller balances, so I have no idea what this is for and the company letter (and email) give me no indication either - they just give me a reference number.
Am I within my rights to request a copy of the original contract signed for this? I'm happy to pay off my debts but I'm now a single parent (not through choice) on Income Support and I'm not about to agree to a payment contract when I have no idea what it is for.
What should I do? I'm not shirking my debts, but I'm not going to pay money to a company that can't even tell me what it's for from probably 10 years ago.
Apologies if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it to where appropriate.
Thank you in advance.
