Pre-Registered Car...3 Month Rule ?

Hi
Hope you can help on this.
I've bought pre-registered cars previously as good saving on new.
I've settled on a Renault and there's a few 2013 62 plates with 10 miles on clock. Saving is c. £3k under list price, so worth bearing the downside of owning a car that's 1 reg plate behind.
Problem I've found is 1 dealer won't release the V5 and log book until 3 months have expired. (registered Feb 2013) I realise it's a no-no as if I go ahead with deal, won't be able to insure the car because not registered owner & keeper. (another dealer will release V5 but 200 miles further away)
What's the legal position regarding the 3 month rule ?
Thanks in advance.

What's this 3 month rule thing you are on about?
I bet the same model of car you purchased would save you the same or more £3k on new.

Walk away walk, walk ,walk this deal is dodgy beyond belief. Read the DVLA requirements on transfer of a vehicle ownership.

A dealer I use to work for use to register cars for their rental department thus having to pay no VAT. Stipulation is that the car must be registered to them for a certain amount of time and that 80% of it's use is rental (because the hirer then pays the VAT, not the dealer). But I never saw these cars actually on the rental fleet...

Obviously this was very naughty and eventually they did get copped hence they no longer exist.

    Thanks for replies.
The way I understand it, a dealer must keep car registration(and car) for 3 months, normally running it as a Demonstrator. It's to stop dealer massively discounting car by registering it as a sale to themselves and then selling it on 1 week later.

It's not a "rule" though, merely a part of the contract they have with their supplier. Any dealer offering you a car in this way is usually shady and should be avoided.

Perhaps the Dealer would like to lend you the car till the 3 months run out and then do the sale deal ?

That's basically what they are trying to do. But they will want the asking price as a security deposit.

Following a Court case last year it is now also illegal to sell a car and go through the registration process at a later date.

Maybe you should remind the dealer of this fact.

The last line in Para 7 of the Judgement may make them realise what they could be open to.

If you take delivery of the car and write to the DVLA explaining that you are the owner and keeper of the car, they will send you a V5. They are well aware of the '3 month' practice.

    +1

Its amazing how many people compare the list price of a car to the price to justify how they've thousands by buying an ex demo.

There are many reasons why a new car will work out cheaper than an ex demo, big discounts on new being only one of them.
