I Tunes on one computer but not another

Options
Hi I'm not very up on these things sorry.
I have itunes on my old pc with all my songs on it, I have added itunes to this laptop and used my itunes log in. None of my songs are on showing on the laptop it is empty. I am getting an iphone and would like the songs on there but if I can't even get them on the laptop I have little hope.
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong ???
Thanks

you have to copy the contents of your itunes folder over to the new computer, or if you have downloaded the tracks from itunes you will have to download them onto the new machine which you can do from looking at your history on the store - with the iphone you will also have to download the tracks onto it, either by syncing with itunes on the pc via usb cable or again by downloading them from the store

I think you've signed into iTunes store which allows you to download songs, music videos, tv shows, etc. You don't need to sign into the store in order to use iTunes.

The easiest way to add songs to the new laptop would be to copy the old itunes folder(possibly in My Documents, can't recall exactly as I don't use Windows anymore) from your old laptop and then paste it into your new laptop to replace the iTunes folder inside your new laptop. If this doesn't show the songs in your new laptop, go to file>add to files to library (or something similar) and locate the songs where you pasted it.

    Hope this helped :)

Thanks both. I thought the songs would just appear, I have no idea how to copy the itunes folder and then send it my new laptop. I can only copy and paste on one machine and thought I was being clever :D.

I think I will have to drag a passerby in off the street...

If you have a router or homehub for your internet access, connect both machines to this, set up a shared folder on the new one, and a copy/paste is the same as it would be within one machine.

However, if all your songs were loaded from CDs that you still have, and there's not that many of them, you may be quicker and easier just loading them to the iTunes library on the new machine

Or use a USB stick to transfer data between laptops :p

Or if you don't mind spending 20 quid to solve the problem (and some other problems, too), sign up for iTunes match.

Hi, not sure if it is still the case. I think that you have to authorise your laptop to your I Tunes account, ie you are allowed up to a certain number of PCs for each account, so if your laptop hasn't been authorised to your account you need to do this. You can also unauthorise any computer you do not use ITunes on. Hope this helps, not sure if above still in place.

After some tinkering I opened file sharing on both pc and new laptop. I authorised new laptop to itunes. All I have is my purchased items in my new laptop itunes, none of my cds or other downloaded stuff. Better than before but still not good. I may have a memory stick somewhere as I can't seem to do the copy paste thing and make folders........

Missmarple - on your old computer, browse to your Music folder - it'll contain a folder called iTunes. Your music is in here. How much do you have? Right click the iTunes folder and click Properties. You should see a size in GB. If you've got a 16GB USB stick and your library is 10GB for example, you're in luck, copy and paste the iTunes folder onto the drive, then plug it into the new computer, and copy and paste it from the drive into your new music folder. When you open iTunes, all your stuff will be there just like before, down to how many times you've played each track.
This is a good time to ask - where's your back up drive? It would be really handy to move stuff like this from one computer to another. You do back up, don't you?!! If not go buy one. Pick one of these the same size as your new computer's hard drive...

If the pc and the new laptop are both connected to your wireless router, you can transfer the music from one to the other wirelessly by enabling homesharing in itunes.
