Not spending income - adds to inability to claim benefits?

Our thoughts are that he has never had any help from the state and lives like a pauper. Hasn't paid out for new furniture or a car, holidays or clothes (takes hand outs from family) in more than 40 years.
Doesnt seem fair in a way that the state could take his money when others live it up and spend what they have and take all they can from the state.
It doesn't seem very fair that he should have everything paid for by the state when he has money in the bank, only for his family to inherit when he dies.
It's his choice not to have a holiday and so on.0 -

I am at a loss as to why you are posting
No-one is stopping him from buying anything he wants. No one is forcing him to live the way he does.
Is this about your concern that he does need help in the future then your inheritance will decrease? Not being judgemental, just that you seem under the impression that the state is preventing him from spending the money whereas it is him that isn't spending it.
Why don't you suggest that he uses his money to make his life more comfortable?0 -
Sounds like another one who seems to think that they have a god given right to an inheritance when an elderly relative dies. He's 78 and in poor health so should be encouraged to spend some of his cash to make his last years as comfortable as possible.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

He is 78 what is he saving it for ?
I hope he spends it on wine, women and song and wastes the rest.0 -

It can be very hard to convince some older people that they need to spend money on themselves when they've had a lifetime of not doing so.
Taking his age and health into account, it would be worth discussing Power of Attorney with him.0 -

But he DOES get help from the state - a pension. He chooses not to spend it! What on earth is he saving it for?! Your inheritance by any chance...
Other people don't necesarily "live it up" but I expect they at least buy furniture and new clothes or have a holiday once in a while. That isn't unusual you know. He should start spending his money on his own comfort and if that money runs out THEN the state can step in and help. DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

If it's inheritance, he needs to start giving it out early... if not, then he needs to be encouraged to spend it...on things like furniture and making his life comfortable.

The problem seems to be one of possible self neglect by the father and that the family do what they can but there may come a time when more is needed and that would have to be paid for.
If it has to come out of his money until the capital reduces, that's still a tidy sum to be left.
And if he won't agree to pay it and nobody in the family can physically help out and he won't agree POA, is anyone in a position to pay, with other members of the family all agreeing they get repaid when the time comes.0
