Depends where you get the phone from - if you buy from Apple direct without a contract, it will be unlocked.
Its quite easy to cut it down yourself, plenty of links online to show you how. I've done it myself, so it must be easy!0 -
If you buy an iphone from a network it will be locked to that network, no matter what sim you try first, if you buy from Apple with a contract, it will be locked to the contract network.
If you buy from Apple simfree it will be unlocked to any network and will never lock, but if buy the iPhone as simfree from CarphoneWarehouse it will lock to the first UK network sim you put in.
Simfree to CarphoneWarehouse doesn't mean unlocked.====0 -
If you ask your current provider they'll give you a new Sim for your iPhone for free.0

Thanks everyone. It's actually a colleagues phone, she has upgraded and offered me her old iPhone 4. She was on orange and bought the phone through Orange so I assume it would be locked to them. Worth a try I guess, I think there are a couple of places locally that can unlock them so may be worth me doing that!0

Not cheap to get unlocked you are best to go though Orange they are a bit slow but will be about £20...you will also need your friend to do it for you being she is or was with Orange
Anywhere else will be double that or more some places if i am right.Nobody is Perfect. I am Nobody, therefore I am Perfect.0 -
The places you mention can only jailbreak*, NOT permanently unlock. The original contract holder can pay £20 and have it done officially and permanently.
*Any new iOS update will relock it again.
Orange can take up to 5 weeks to process the request.0 -

Thanks. Is she still able to do this even though she has upgraded since?0
