Yes they do. (provided that it's unused).

Sainsbury advertise that they have a 28 day returns policy and as this is clearly displayed on signs by the tills, this terms forms part of the contract of sale and is legally binding.

I think what pmduk was trying to say that according to consumer laws, shops don't have to accept returns unless it's faulty. However, usually stores have policies that exceed than what they are legally required to do.

That's some distance from what they said - and even if this is what they meant, it's not relevant to the OP since they do have extra contractual rights above the legal minimum.

we took the unopened and sealed coffee machine back last night and got a full refund, as sainsburys (mentioned above) have a 28 day return policy, then purchsed another at the 'sale' price..

now feeling a little less ripped off...
