There are different ways of doing things. I have been to St Lucia, stayed in a villa and did everything independently. Hired a car, saw the whole island, mixed with locals, went to street parties and went to secluded beaches. The villa was £400 per week rented via holidayrentals.co.uk and cheap virgin flights through a company called Caribean Connections.

Also went to Sri Lanka. First time on a package deal, second time went to the same hotel but booked the hotel direct. £40 per night bed breakfast and evening meal for two, then booked separate flights. Worked out much cheaper than the package deal option and it was the same hotel.

And did you just wander all around the island?

The Dominican republic is a dangerous place in you do not know what you are doing...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

No exploring on holiday? oh dear....I really do wonder if people who go on holiday there realize how dangerous the place is outside of the tourist areas...It is one hell of a poverty stricken place..

I know that - which is why we chose to go on organised excursions. Santo Domingo was a particularly interesting day out, as was the boat tour of the Samana peninsula.

It was interesting to hear about some of the steps that the government is taking to reduce poverty, e.g. providing free breakfasts to all school children to try and encourage them to attend classes.

    Hey

I would really like to go somewhere tropical, can you guys help me?

As some of the earlier replies have said, you really do need to provide much more information than you have above.

    Do you have a budget?

    What time of year?
No point in recommending somewhere if it's the hurricane or monsoon season when you plan to travel.
    etc etc

Maybe go on a cruise, and see lots of different destinations on one holiday, and have the comfort and relaxation of the days at sea.
