Cons new 'Mummy Tax' Check Your Situation

  • I am an ordinary hard-working young mum. I think it's great to have things like the SureStart provision, but personally think £180 "cut" a year (it's clearly not a tax) is hardly anything to write home about and certainly wouldn't choose to retain that benefit over benefits for, say, certain disabilities. I would not have chosen to have my child if £180 a year was the line between solvency and financial disaster!

We couldn't afford for me to stay at home once my maternity leave ends. I do agree childcare is very expensive but you do your sums before you choose to have a child. I'm afraid that in my position I see being able to stay at home with your child in the early years as a luxury many don't have.
