Well you have to ultimately decide what to do. To be honest it sounds like you already have and you want some people to help you feel better about it by saying it's ok ;) The most sensible advice would be to NOT book a holiday until you have paid off your debt and you can then ensure you can pay for it (and will have paid less interest on your debts in the meantime). If you are paying your debts back quickly that shouldn't take too long?

That being said, I took a holiday while paying off debt. For me, I decided that having a break, something to look forward to and a 'life' was more important than paying off my debts as quick as I possibly could. I was in the fortunate position that I was managing my debt myself and paying off a decent sum each month, a lot more than minimums, so I could decide to pay a bit less to my debts and save up towards the holiday. I didn't need to take out any credit or anything to pay for it, and wouldn't have just for a holiday.

A lot of people 'want' a holiday, not everyone can afford one, and yes a lot of people are in debt but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to be!

  • Ok, well thank you to everyone!

I want to point out that the holidays were not going to be added to my debt, they would be paid for cash.

Having said that, I appreciate all of the info about what can happen and houses and so on.

We need a new home and this is the reason I decided to "stop" the debt and find a way forward. So that really did make sense to me!

Thanks again all, it's on hold for the moment. Like the idea about the holiday within a holiday, however not sure if we can get away from them! Well we will see what we can do (Thank you).

I'm not in debt - But could never afford to go to Tunisia for a holiday, not without getting myself into debt for the privilege. Looks like its Butlins in Minehead, if we are lucky. ;)

I have found it cheaper to go to Tunisia than to go to Devon!

It's cheaper once you are there and you know what you are paying for upfront.

I also appreciate the warm weather a lot as it always seems to rain when I go away in UK.

I could afford so much, if only I wasn't in debt, but to be honest as someone else said that's what caused some of my debts - a few too many holidays and hotel stays around the UK (and not cheap ones - I don't know what I was thinking )

Cash that could go to reducing your debt. Another fallacy!

I'm seriously not being b1tchy - just bluntly realistic.

That applies to everyone in debt.

The MSE Martin thing to do whenever the possibility of a spend opportunity arises is ask yourself 'Do I WANT it, or do I NEED it'. You want the second holiday, it isn't needed. What is needed is to clear your debts so in future you can have the things you want :)

    Easy peasy.

It seems to me that you've already decided but you are hoping for people to make you feel better about it. It's up to you, but I would pay off some debt every time.
  • Couldn't agree more Mozette.
