Debt, but "want" a holiday.

Yes I should have said no, it was told to us by my father as a "free holiday", yet we had to pay £500 flights (fair enough) and now I'm being asked about money for a car and car child seats.
I also found the flights cheaper myself, but they had already been booked, which made me furious! You know I have the mse bug.
And to top it all off, they told me "oh you have found the flights cheaper, but the ones we have (i.e. the more expensive ones) are cheaper overall for everyone, which makes me think they were not the price they told me at all and I'm being ripped off! Mad. (Sorry!)
ALSO - About booking next year, I can't find 2014 dates online just 2012/2013 (yes 2012 still!!!) LOL. Thanks again.0 -

You are spending money you don't have! Try living for the day and covering your spends before you spend what you have yet to earn.

Yes of course I do! Well when you see my posts here in 12 months, you will see NOT.
I cover my spends each month and repay maybe £400 of debt per month, sometimes more.
You are entitled to your opinion, but when I say I will be debt free I will be, well withstanding my mortgage/s0 -

You owe according to your signature £6494.
You can't afford 2 holidays a year.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -
Now that's fair enough. You are correct. But I want to afford them and will do.
But it's unfair to say I want to be or will be in debt all my life.
Talking of debt how many "rich" people are still in debt, because people always want more!
Thanks anyway0 -

You are spending on top of debt, money that you haven't got and haven't yet earnt. So it's a never ending cycle. So you spend £1k on this hol and you are up to £7494 debt. And another £1k on a second hol. £8494. Meanwhile still paying off all that you are getting stressed which needs another 2 hols next year.
People don't always want more. That's a fallacy that you are telling yourself to justify spending.
We didn't have a holiday for 10 years because we couldn't afford it. We might have wanted one, or needed one, but we couldn't afford one so we didn't have one. It happens. Deal with it.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -
On the family holiday, could you, your partner and your kids take off to a different resort for a couple of days so you have a little break from the rest of the family? Stay somewhere really swish overnight and treat yourself to something you couldn't maybe do with the whole family. A kind of holiday within a holiday if you like?Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.100 -
Well my opinion for what its worth.
If you look at my sig you can see the level of debt that I had. Quite a lot of that was accrued with 'wanting' things because I am getting older and want to enjoy life, including a couple of lovely holidays for my family. Our debt we thought at the time was manageable, we were paying it down at 1k a month.
It doesn't take much to tip the scales where it becomes unmanageable, my oh had his overtime cut, my business trade slowed down. Then the trouble starts, paying the debts more slowly, and adding purchases to cards which are things that are needed but no contingency has been made.
When I booked my holidays I had the same mindset and not as much debt as you, its also the little things that add up i.e. those things that you see when you are on your hols that you 'must 'have' to remember the holiday by, plus spends, travel to/from airport etc as another poster said.
I wish I had waited, we have sold our property to clear the debt and now live in rented. I feel that I have sacrificed mine and my families financial future for a quick fix ,and wish I hadn't. But hey, i'll always have the holiday memories won't I, even though I'll probably never get a mortgage again.
If you really want advice then mine would be pay of the debt, get a emergency fund of a couple of months salary, then look at 'wants'. You may be pleased you did in the future.
By the sound of it you have already made up your mind, lets hope it doesn't turn out badly like it did for us.LBM 1.1.16 = £27096.59 - now £17,020.38
Paydbx 2017 - £3588.90/£7000 = 51.27% - number 74
Paydbx 2016 - £6487.31/£7000 = 92.67% - number 740 -
Book it for next year, give yourself something to look forward to whilst paying off debt. Pay everything back and have a guilt free break, if you we're confident about your decision would you be asking on here?
When you get back from holiday give yourself an MSE project of finding the cheapest way to book, direct and secrete, online or playing off the travel agents.
Good luck whatever you do.0
